Duties and Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the Chief of Accounting this position is authorized to assist the Bureau Chief in managing accounting and financial activities and is authorized to act for the Chief as directed. The incumbent will serve as the Deputy Chief in the Bureau of Accounting and be responsible for supervising support staff to ensure smooth day-to-day operations. Job duties and responsibilities will include assisting in the overall leadership and management of the Bureau of Accounting. The incumbent will work with internal staff to ensure all mandate reporting requirements within the Bureau of Accounting and for external entities are performed timely and accurately.

This position will be responsible for reviewing and updating policies and procedures, developing training programs, and overseeing these programs for employees on new processes and accounting systems, as needed. The incumbent will be an agency representative for the State's project developing the new statewide accounting system (Florida PALM). The incumbent will also assist in implementation of bureau wide initiatives.

  • Knowledge of the State of Florida laws, rules, and accounting policies and procedures.
  • Skill in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Skill in communicating effectively with internal and external stakeholders, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to use sound judgment to identify and solve complex problems, generate and evaluate alternative solutions, and make recommendations.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships and supervise others.
  • Ability to perform process improvements and understand the needs of the business as a whole and its strategic direction.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with the following:
  • At least four (4) years of supervisory experience.
  • At least seven (7) years of experience in the professional accounting field.
  • Experience implementing new processes and/or systems.
  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance or accounting.
