Description
The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), Enterprise Division, is seeking a Director of Tennis (Recreation/Park Facility Manager II) to oversee the racquet operations of the Pauline Betz Addie (Cabin John) Tennis and Wheaton Indoor Tennis Centers. This position will supervise staff, facility and equipment maintenance, administration, facility budget, marketing, and customer service.
This position requires regular exercise of independent judgment and performance of duties within policy guidelines. It also involves the development of successful business strategies and methodologies to achieve optimum facility operations.
Weekends and Evenings are required for this position.
Examples of Important Duties
Manages the overall day-to-day operations for Pauline Betz Addie Tennis Center and Wheaton Indoor Tennis facility. Helps develop and implement long-term goals and operational procedures (e.g., hours, rules, safety, etc.) at both tennis facilities. Supervises designated staff, including two career (Recreation/Park Facility Manager I's) and seasonal front office staff. Ensures the career program managers oversee and manage tennis instructors (seasonal staff). Recruits, selects, trains, and evaluates staff. Plans, schedules, and assigns work. Conducts performance appraisals. Ensures staff receives various trainings. Manages and coordinates the facilities' operating budgets, which include revenue-producing facilities and programs. Works with managers on project planning and facility improvements. Prepares financial reports and assists with fee recommendations. Responsible for regularly monitoring revenues and expenditures within the approved budget and reporting them to the Enterprise Regional Operations Manager. Oversees the year-round programming and special events with the two career managers' assistance at both tennis facilities. Responsible for the overall facility schedules, including seasonal court time lottery process, spot time, group lesson time, special events, etc. Manages facility records and reports in accordance with Commission policies and procedures*. Prepares and maintains various administrative records of the facilities, such as revenue and expenses, inventory of supplies and equipment, time cards, rentals, facility maintenance, and attendance. Attends professional seminars to identify new programs, methods, and equipment that might be useful for the facility. Conducts research to identify trends or seek information that would be useful to develop programs. Develops marketing strategies with marketing staff. Assists Marketing Department staff in marketing facilities. Ensures staff checks programs offered in the Parks and Recreation Guide are accurately entered into the system. Oversees the maintenance and repairs of the facilities and grounds and ensures they are promptly addressed with minimal disruption to facility programs or schedules. Oversees the custodial contracts to ensure work is performed according to the scope of work for both facilities. Manages the facilities' customer service activities. Sets a positive example for employees by ensuring customers are treated in a prompt, professional, and respectful manner.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Parks and Recreation, Facility Management, Recreation Management, Education, Business Administration, Physical Education, Communication, Leisure Services, or any related field. Two (2) years of responsible professional experience working in a facility related to parks, recreation, leisure services, or area of required specialty (e.g., arts, performing arts, equestrian, tennis, aquatics, gymnastics, ice rinks); including one (1) year as a facility manager, program coordinator or supervisor. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total six (6) years. Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of the position. Contingent upon area of assignment, some positions in this class may require valid: (a) operating license (e.g., county pool operator, childcare license) as appropriate; (b) First Aid, CPR, automated external defibrillator (AED) certifications; or (c) certifications as related to assignment (e.g., Lifeguard Instruction, Fundamentals of Gymnastics). Pass Commission medical exam.

Works inside and outside an assigned facility which may operate seven days per week. Works extended hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays. On-call to respond to emergency situations as required. Incumbents in this class must frequently remain in a stationary position, operate vehicles, communicate, and exchange information with internal staff and the public, be able to see for short and long distances, and occasionally lift equipment and other items weighting up to 49 pounds and ascend and descend ladders and stairs.
