Job Summary
Reporting to the Chief Nursing Officer, the Director Emergency Department plans, oversees, and directs the nursing functions for emergency services and urgent care operations for Baylor Scott and White Health (BSWH) at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Hillcrest, which may include emergency room registration, triage, patient assessment, nursing care, and related services. Leads delivery of clinical emergency care within assigned area of responsibility which may include one or more hospitals, clinics, or other BSWH healthcare facilities. Develops and implements policies, procedures, protocols, and programs to deliver integrated emergency services that provide quality patient care and are in alignment with BSWH goals and objectives. Collaborates and communicates with hospital inpatient departments and other BSWH facilities to coordinate appropriate patient care and effective utilization of BSWH staff and departmental resources. May inspect emergency services departments, workspaces, equipment, and facilities for safety regulations and ensures compliance with relevant local, state, and federal laws. Develops and implements approved standards and guidelines for emergency and urgent care programs and BSWH system-wide emergency services initiatives.
An entity Director translates and implements strategic plans and objectives for area of responsibility. Makes final decisions on operational matters and ensures achievement of objectives. Recommends policies and organizational changes for area. Plans and executes projects and initiatives that meet annual objectives. Plans and directs the operations of a department or area, with responsibility for staffing, processes, budgets, and costs of the unit. Leads and advises subordinate(s) to meet schedules, resolve technical problems, and monitor performance. Has a larger, more complex organization or functional area than a manager. Often has one or more managers or supervisors reporting to the role.
Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Hillcrest has 260 licensed beds and is a Magnet-designated Level II Trauma Center.
Essential Functions
- Directs the nursing emergency services for assigned area of responsibility for BSWH.
- Recommends and implements strategic and operational plans and priorities for nursing emergency services aligned to BSWH overall business objectives.
- Directs the evaluation and prioritization of patients in the emergency department and facilitates appropriate patient care.
- Directs and coordinates emergency care and services, monitoring resources, and leads interdisciplinary teams to achieve optimal clinical outcomes.
- Develops and implements policies, procedures, and processes for operation of the emergency department to ensure patient safety and quality of care.
- Establishes supply stock levels and monitors proper use, repair, and replacement equipment and supplies, including medications.
- Collaborates and participates in service, departmental, hospital committees as assigned to enhance and improve emergency services and patient care.
- Leads the development and implementation of metrics, dashboards, and reporting to track, measure, and improve emergency care provided.
- Directs the identification of potential issues or problems affecting emergency care and implements solutions with follow-through and communication.
- Ensures compliance with all applicable legal, accrediting, and regulatory requirements impacting clinical emergency care.
Key Success Factors
- Bachelor's degree in nursing or related field. Master's degree strongly preferred.
- 3+ years of nursing experience in emergency services.
- Experience in a leadership role preferred.
- Registered Nurse (RN) license required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
- Experience collaborating across multiple departments and clinical disciplines within a large, complex healthcare organization preferred.
- Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
- Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree; Master's strongly preferred
- 3 years of experience
- Nursing Administration certification (NEA-BC, NE-BC, etc); can be obtained after hire
- BLS
