The Department of Biological Sciences at Chicago State University (CSU) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in human physiology that will begin in August 2025. This is a full-time, 9-month position. Our Department is invested in supporting research scholars, and the successful candidate will establish a robust, independent, and externally funded research program, which includes mentorship and advising of undergraduate and graduate students.
Applicants must demonstrate an ability to teach non-majors and majors biology courses including Anatomy and Physiology, Basic and Advanced Human Physiology, Comparative Cellular Neurophysiology, contribute to the Capstone research course for undergraduates, and Cell Physiology for graduate (M.S) students. The successful candidate is expected to develop an advanced course that will contribute to our associated electives. The area of research specialization for this position is open, but we are interested in human/vertebrate physiology with a focus on neuroscience, however, we welcome strong candidates with other related research interests who can collaborate with current faculty.
Additionally, our Department is interested in supporting research scholars whose research contributes to diversity, inclusion, equity, and a commitment to justice. Service to the Department, College, and University is also expected.
The successful candidate must have the ability to work with and be sensitive to the educational needs of a diverse urban population including (but not limited to) students of color, LBGTQIA students, students from low-income backgrounds, first-generation students, students with disabilities, undocumented students, nontraditional students, student veterans, and English-language learners. Chicago State University is a minority-serving institution and an equal opportunity employer and qualified women, and minorities are encouraged to apply.
Applications will be reviewed immediately and until the position is filled with an expected starting date of Fall Semester 2025. Application packages should include: 1. A cover letter summarizing the qualifications and relevant expertise along with the names and contact information of three professional references, 2. Current CV, 3. Teaching philosophy, and 4. A statement of scientific research agenda. Include DEI experience as a part of the teaching and research statements.
Required Education
All applicants must must have a PhD and Postdoctoral research training.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Applicants must demonstrate commitment in mentoring undergraduate students in research and develop and/or contribute to course-based research experiences (CUREs) in Scientific Inquiry and Capstone courses. The candidate is expected to do physiology research using model organisms appropriate for graduate and undergraduate research using cell organism and show interest in using our animal facility. Priority will be given to applicants who can provide students with fundamental research skills and opportunities at other local or regional research institutions. Applicants are desired to have a track-record and commitment to excellence in teaching, establishing an externally funded research lab, and mentoring thesis lab research students.
