This is an exciting time for the Department of Transportation as we move forward with the region to develop traffic safety solutions to daily operational and road safety challenges. The Prince William County Department of Transportation is looking for a dynamic engineer with an interest in helping the community to fill the role of Senior Traffic Safety Engineer. The role will manage studies and tasks in the roadway safety audit and studies program and implement traffic and safety improvement projects. The role includes implementation of the Comprehensive Traffic Safety Action Plan in conjunction with the FHWA Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant. The person will also support the implementation of the Red Light, School Zone Speed, and Work Zone Speed Photo Enforcement programs, along with supporting members of the Department of Transportation, the County and other agencies in implementing a range of transportation, traffic, safety and streetlighting projects.

You will be eligible to receive a hiring incentive of $3,000. This incentive will be paid in two installments and is subject to all applicable tax withholding and reporting requirements. The first installment of $1,500 is payable in the paycheck that covers the 90th calendar day of employment. The second installment of $1,500 will be paid in the paycheck for the pay period that includes your end of probation date, normally 1 year from hire date.

About This Role:

This position will manage studies and tasks in the roadway safety audit and studies program and will be responsible for coordinating the required traffic counts and data collection, developing and producing plans, and coordinating public and Board of County Supervisors/official engagement, and interdepartmental coordination. In this role, the person will work on a variety of traffic engineering projects and initiatives, including preparing and reviewing road safety audits, reviewing traffic impact and intersection/corridor improvement studies, and developing studies in support of the traffic safety engineering section. The position will support identification and implementation of projects utilizing the County's Comprehensive Traffic Safety Action Plan, along with supporting the Red Light, School Zone Speed, and Work Zone Speed Photo Enforcement programs with implementation and data collection/analysis. The position will be dealing directly with elected officials, citizens, consultants, and inter-agency staff to resolve problems and to improve the community's transportation safety and will be conducting field reviews, compiling recommendations and coordinating with various agencies to implement ideas into operational solutions. In addition, this position will be required to manage small scale multimodal transportation enhancement projects and studies and manage them to ensure they are accomplished within the established budget, on schedule and result in enhancing traffic safety.
Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in Engineering and 2 years of related traffic engineering experience.
Preferences:
  • Experience in engineering/planning, experience in a position dealing with citizens and/or government agencies related to transportation, community or small/medium scale engineering projects.
  • Experience in traffic analysis preparation including traffic impact, corridor, intersection improvement, and operational studies and experience in preparing and reviewing Roadway Safety Audits.
  • Experience in traffic engineering design plan preparation including traffic signal, MOT, lighting, and pavement marking and signing plans.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with some experience in public speaking, presentations, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Possess strong project management skills, leadership qualities, and technical knowledge in traffic engineering with a proven track record of successfully working with various stakeholders.
  • Have the ability to provide prompt, effective and courteous customer service, conduct thorough research, work independently and with other team members/departments, and manage multiple tasks and timelines.

Special Requirements:
  • Ability to conduct field reviews and activities
  • Driver's license and must be able to drive a County vehicle

Work Schedule:

Normal Office hours with the ability to attend night and/or weekend meetings as needed and occasionally conduct field reviews outside of normal business hours, with the potential to partially work remotely depending on the Traffic Safety Engineering Branch team's schedule.
Starting Salary Range:

$76,069.50 - $104,676.00
