The Police Training Coordinator is a critical civilian position responsible for supporting all aspects of the Training Unit's responsibilities within the Police Department. This role involves coordinating a wide range of technical, administrative, and operational tasks to ensure that department personnel receive the highest quality training opportunities.

The Police Training Coordinator assists the Training Unit Sergeant with ensuring compliance with Colorado P.O.S.T. (Peace Officers Standards and Training) rules and regulations, particularly regarding mandatory training requirements for P.O.S.T.-certified law enforcement professionals. By combining logistical expertise, regulatory compliance, and hands-on support, the Police Training Coordinator fosters realistic, integrated, and safe training environments. Through strategic collaboration, detailed planning, and a commitment to operational excellence, this role plays a vital part in maintaining and advancing the knowledge, skills, and abilities of department personnel, contributing to their professional success and the department's mission.

General Duties:
  • Coordinates and schedules all internal and external training for sworn and non-sworn personnel, ensuring alignment with departmental needs and priorities.
  • Organizes and facilitates initial orientation and onboarding programs for newly hired personnel in collaboration with Human Resources and other relevant entities.
  • Coordinates with and manages specialized instructor groups, to include but not limited to: Firearms, Arrest Control / Defensive Tactics, Oleoresin Capsicum (OC), Field Training Officers, Intoxilyzer, Radar / Lidar, Taser, Baton, and Body Cameras, to ensure effective and specialized training delivery.
  • Maintains supplies, equipment, and facilities utilized by the Training Unit, including audio/visual presentation equipment, meeting rooms, firearms-related tools and facilities, law enforcement vehicles, physical fitness courses or training areas, and an inventory of uniforms and related equipment.
  • Oversees the firearms range, including its maintenance, scheduling for outside agency training, and in-house training sessions, ensuring safety and operational readiness.
  • Prepares detailed reports and statistics on training activities, compliance, and outcomes to support continuous improvement and decision-making.
  • Ensures compliance with Colorado P.O.S.T. (Peace Officers Standards and Training) rules and regulations regarding mandatory training requirements for law enforcement professionals, including sworn and non-sworn personnel.
  • Processes and tracks training requests from department personnel, ensuring timely review and scheduling.
  • Occasionally provides hands-on, in-person, or virtual training sessions when qualified to do so, supplementing the work of Subject Matter Experts (SMEs).
  • Assists in monitoring and managing training budgets for each division/unit within the department, ensuring the effective and efficient use of allocated funds, personnel, materials, facilities, and time.
  • Develops and communicates official training plans, policies, and procedures to department personnel, fostering clarity and alignment of Police Department Training against other City and County Department's training.
  • Assists in the creation and implementation of short- and long-term training goals, policies, and procedures to address departmental needs and emerging trends.
  • Gathers, interprets, and analyzes data to prepare studies, reports, and recommendations for improving, maintaining, or modifying existing training programs, tactics, and equipment.
  • Identifies and recommends operational improvements to enhance the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of training-related functions.
  • Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents and ensure a safe training environment.

Minimum Qualifications

Education
  • High school graduate or GED equivalent.
  • Some college credit from an accredited college or university is preferred.

Experience-
  • 5+ years experience required as a sworn law enforcement officer.
  • 3+ years experience as a law enforcement trainer including experience developing, evaluating and presenting law enforcement related curriculum preferred.

Years of related experience may be substituted for required education, however education cannot be substituted for the necessary work experience. Candidates must meet the minimum required years of work experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

New hires must, as a condition of employment, pass the following pre-offer and post-offer tests in addition to the interview(s): CVSA, physical agility obstacle course, background examination, driving records check, medical examination, psychological examination(s), drug screening and fingerprint check through CBI/FBI.

  • Cannot have been convicted of a felony or a disqualifying misdemeanor involving moral turpitude
  • Possess and maintain valid driver's license with the ability to obtain a valid Colorado driver's license and safe driving record for continued employment
  • Must be able to obtain valid American Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR certifications.
  • Ability to meet Department's physical standards.

  • Work involves a significant amount of time spent in a patrol vehicle and a high degree of exposure to hazards and danger (from traffic hazards to the danger inherent in working with career criminals and emotionally unstable persons).
  • Working conditions can be highly stressful.
  • This position also involves shift work including weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
  • The noise level in the work environment is moderately noisy.
  • Frequently required to sit and talk or hear.
  • Occasionally required to stand; walk; run; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
