Executive Director

Position Description Overview

Under the direction of the Executive Committee, the Executive Director is responsible for utilizing trauma-informed care in developing and leading the team to carry out the mission to its fullest potential.

Essential Job Functions
Oversee the ministry through collaboration with board and staff to develop and implement the organization's mission, core values and long-term strategic goals.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive and productive organizational culture.
  • Collaboration with the Finance/Audit Committee and Finance Manager to develop and manage the annual budget, ensuring financial stability, and that resources are allocated effectively.
  • Develop and execute fundraising strategies that ensure the financial sustainability of the organization; including grants, events and individual donations.
  • Oversee the preparation, submission and reporting of grant proposals.
  • Advocate by cultivating and maintaining strategic partnerships with other organizations, government agencies and stakeholders.
  • Work closely with the Board of Directors, providing necessary information and resources to make informed decisions; help to ensure that the board is engaged and effective.
  • Ensure that the development, implementation, and evaluation of the non-profit's programs and services are aligned with the mission and meet community needs.
  • Work with shelter case management staff to: review case files, identify guest needs, ensure that the guests are receiving the best, most appropriate services possible and necessary documentation is complete.
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Human Services or related field or an equivalent combination of experience and education that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Minimum of ten years of Human Services and or Clinical experience working with the economically disadvantaged.
  • Minimum of five years progressive managerial experience, directly supervising other employees.

Certifications, Business Licenses, Registrations
  • Certifications in mental health or substance use an asset. MSW Preferred
Language Skills
  • Ability to read, analyze and comprehend financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from guests, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or Boards of Directors.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English fluently and clearly.
  • Bilingual in Spanish an asset.
Mathematical Skills
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability
  • Ability to define problems, collects data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Computer Skills
  • To perform this job successfully individuals must be proficient on a personal computer and demonstrate intermediate skills with the standard features of various personal computer word processing and spreadsheet software (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, Email, internal software and the internet.)

Physical/Environmental demands
  • Physical activity involving kneeling, sitting or squatting, ascending and descending stairs
  • Ability to hear ordinary conversation as well as other sounds
  • Ability to see items, such as furniture to walk around, paperwork, monitors, etc.
  • Ability to smell odors, such as smoke, gas, etc.
  • Physically able to perform the above outlined job functions including lifting at least 10 pounds


Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $95,000-$115,000 per year
