Position Summary

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller will be responsible for all areas relating to accounting functions and financial reporting (cash basis). The Controller will supervise, execute and report the transactional business of the organization and be responsible for establishing and maintaining policies and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting. As part of the month end close process, they are responsible for the compilation of the monthly Federal Election Commission (FEC) report. This position has five direct reports.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Monitor compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and company procedures
  • Monitor compliance with Federal Election Commission (FEC) regulations and company procedures
  • Performs detailed review of all input and schedules supporting periodic FEC filings
  • Issues timely and complete periodic financial statements under US GAAP
  • Prepares financial statements and other reports to summarize and interpret current company financial position
  • Reviews, investigates and corrects errors and inconsistencies in financial entries, documents and reports
  • Assures information is entered into the accounting system accurately and in accordance with approved budgets
  • Assures compliance with federal, state, local and corporate policies, regulations and laws
  • Researches and analyzes accounting matters
  • Evaluates current accounting practices and policies and drives continuous improvement
  • Works with external auditors during financial and operational audits
  • Prepares work papers and supporting schedules for the annual financial review
  • Provides accounting information to Division Leaders on an as requested basis
  • Ensures integrity of all financial information
  • Ensures compliance with all tax related requirements (federal, state, local)
  • Coordinates monthly closing process
  • Develops and implements various accounting procedures
  • Develops, implements and upgrades financial system controls
  • Recruit, develop, and supervise accounting staff
  • Lead periodic accounting projects
  • All other Ad Hoc projects and duties as assigned

Qualifications
  • 5 plus years of proven experience in a similar role
  • Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Expert understanding of financial statements including balance sheet, income statement and cash flow
  • Ability to develop and establish financial policies and procedures
  • Experience in public accounting and/or audit is preferred
  • Experience working with a non-profit, multi-entity or fund accounting industry is desirable
  • Ability to supervise and mentor staff for professional growth
  • Experience using Microsoft Great Plains is desirable
  • Experience with managing fixed assets is desirable
  • Strong computer skills: Word and Excel
  • Ability to work well with others in a team environment

Education, Experience, and Certifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting
  • CPA experience or CPA candidate preferred
