Job Overview of VP of Development

The Associate Vice President of Development is responsible for the organization's overall fundraising and manages relationships with all financial partners. The Associate Vice President of Development oversees a comprehensive fundraising program which may include major gifts, annual giving, planned giving, corporate and foundation relations, grants and special events. This individual will interact with former, current and future donors to encourage ongoing contributions and seek out opportunities for financial support. The Associate Vice President of Development also oversees the Communications and Marketing activities of the organization.

Essential Duties of VP of Development

Key duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy for past, current and prospective donors. Use sales and spending cycles to guide fundraising and campaign decisions.
  • Secure gifts from donors through qualification, cultivation, engagement, and direct solicitation.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen relationships and increase philanthropic support.
  • Working with internal and external stakeholders to build relationships, including Board of Directors, Executive Leadership, and other agency staff.
  • Use fundraising software to record, plan and report on fundraising activities.
  • Ability to manage the grantmaking process, including sourcing, coordinating, preparing proposals and tracking grant results.
  • Oversee and participate in researching and gathering data, writing drafts and obtaining approvals to earn grants, new audiences and better relationships with donors and other organizations.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy for the organization. Keeping abreast of the current trends in both areas to create a respectful reputation for the organization.
  • Oversee all online social media platforms, as well as internal and external communications such as newsletters, annual reports and marketing materials.
  • Create relevant and effective reporting to convey strategies and outcomes for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Represent the organization at external events and cultivate relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Plan and host events that raise awareness of the organization's goals and that support the needs of the staff, children, families and communities we support.
  • Ability to meet and exceed annual fundraising, grant and marketing goals.
  • Work with finance team to prepare, understand and manage annual budget and fundraising goals.
  • Hiring, mentoring and assigning tasks to the Development team.


Essential Qualifications and Skills of VP of Development

Key qualifications and skills include:
  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred in relevant field of study.
  • Three to five years' experience in a similar leadership role.
  • Demonstrated success in securing major gifts and building strong donor relationships.
  • Strong understanding of fundraising principles and best practices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required with a high degree of emotional intelligence in communicating and interacting with stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational, strategic, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to lead and direct others.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Comprehensive understanding and familiarity with sales and marketing strategies, grant writing and event planning.
  • High energy with excellent time management and problem-solving skills with ability to meet and exceed deadlines.
