Background:
As part of the County of San Mateo's ongoing commitment to fostering a welcoming and supportive environment for its immigrant residents, the Office of Community Affairs is dedicated to addressing the heightened fear, anxiety, and misinformation resulting from recent discussions about immigration enforcement. In response to these growing concerns, the Office has ramped up initiatives aimed at creating an inclusive, safe, and supportive environment for immigrant populations-regardless of citizenship status.
The Immigrant Services team plays a critical role in supporting these initiatives by offering essential resources, legal services, and access to support to our diverse immigrant community. The Immigrant Services Coordinator position requires someone who is not only skilled in public speaking and communications but also passionate about immigrant services. The ideal candidate will understand the complexities of immigration-related issues, be able to effectively engage with and empower the community during these challenging times, be a creative thinker and effective problem-solver, and always be looking for innovative ways to engage with residents.

This is a Limited Term position. Limited term positions are full-time, fully benefited, temporary positions. The current position is funded for a minimum of 6 months and could extend up to 12 months or longer depending on the department's needs. Limited Term employees receive medical and dental benefits, like regular employees, and a defined contribution retirement plan (401-A).

- Community Empowerment: Facilitate presentations, workshops, and community events to empower immigrant residents, providing clarity on legal rights, accessing services, and understanding current immigration policies.
- Public Speaking & Storytelling: Deliver impactful presentations to boards, committees, community organizations, and stakeholders. Skilled in telling powerful stories to inspire resilience and build trust within the immigrant community.
- Resource Expansion: Collaborate with local partners, including immigrant legal services, to develop new programs, workshops, and resources. Help organize spotlight series on social media, radio, and other platforms to amplify immigrant voices and issues.
- Crisis Management: Demonstrate the ability to remain calm and professional while working under stress and handling sensitive topics related to immigration enforcement, legal challenges, and misinformation.
- Collaboration & Coordination: Work with various county departments, local stakeholders, and partners to ensure clear communication and facilitate feedback on services and initiatives that impact immigrant communities.

Qualifications
These qualifications are essential to success in this position.
- Experience: Previous experience in program planning, grassroots outreach (field work), community engagement, or event coordination, especially with diverse and immigrant communities.
- Public Speaking: Strong public speaking skills, with the ability to confidently present complex topics in accessible and engaging ways.
- Knowledge: Familiarity with immigration policy, legal issues, and rights is critical. Understanding of San Mateo County's community organizations and government agencies is a plus.
- Communication: Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to prepare clear, concise reports on immigration-related topics.
- Flexibility: Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate community needs.
- Technology Proficiency: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other digital tools for outreach and communication (Canva, Instagram, etc. ).
- Collaboration: Ability to work both independently and as part of a team to achieve program goals.
- Cultural Competency: Experience working with diverse immigrant populations and understanding the unique challenges they face.
Preferred Qualifications include:
- Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish (preferred but not required).
