Guided by the ohpahotn | oohpaahotaan let's fly up together Indigenous Strategy for the University of Saskatchewan, the Educational Development Specialist - Indigenous Education, plans, develops and provides educational development services for our campuses.

Nature of Work: The Educational Development Specialist - Indigenous Education, in partnership with the GMCTL team, will work to enhance student learning experiences across campus. Together we are committed to championing innovative teaching and learning and serve as a central resource for educators, building capacity by providing resources and support on Indigenization, decolonization, and reconciliation through consultation and facilitation.

The Educational Development Specialist - Indigenous Education requires a high level of initiative, interpersonal and facilitation skills with knowledge of higher education teaching and learning literature, exceptional teaching practice in higher education, and a strong knowledge of educational or professional development.

Key to this work is walking alongside educators across the university to provide guidance on Indigenous ways of seeing, being, and becoming for the purposes of facilitation, programming, curriculum, and resource development to enhance teaching and learning practices in all modalities including in-person, online, and land-based learning. There is a responsibility to write and/or contribute to the development of learning materials that support an increased understanding of Indigenous Education.

The Educational Development Specialist - Indigenous Education requires a commitment to an exceptional standard of service and continuous improvement and the candidate will work in a group of educational and curriculum developers that is a highly respected and caring community.

Typical Duties or Accountabilities:
  • Consult and advise educators through formal and informal individual and group consultation in facilitation, programming, curriculum, and resource development according to evidence-informed practices and Indigenous ways of seeing, being, and becoming;
  • Facilitate workshops and consultations developed through the GMCTL for faculty to enhance teaching and learning with a specific emphasis on knowledge of Indigenous history, perspectives, ways of knowing, and cultural and pedagogical practices including Land-based learning;
  • Work with faculty on specific course-related needs (e.g., designing and using rubrics, active learning strategies, and assessment) in the context of Indigenization;
  • Research, plan and design, in collaboration with team members, new services and programming in professional and curriculum development, drawing on good practice and scholarship in this area from Canada and around the world;
  • Collaborates with and informs others in all inclusivity work undertaken by GMCTL;
  • Applies knowledge of, and experience with, indigenization, reconciliation and decolonization to programming, work with partners, and support for faculty and staff;
  • Develop and sustain relationships with Elders in each region and other knowledge holders to guide teaching practices and strategies that create welcoming environments that are consistent with community and cultural protocols;
  • Actively engage in professional development and reflection with the goal of continuous improvement and adaptation to emerging needs;
  • Research innovative practices in Indigenous teaching and learning nationally and internationally, sharing new teaching strategies and approaches at a local level;
  • Assist with the day-to-day operations of the GMCTL when necessary.

Education: Graduate degree required or equivalent education and experience. PhD would be an asset.

Experience: 1-3 years of experience with supporting professional learning or faculty development with an emphasis on Indigenous knowledges, approaches, and histories is required. Demonstrated understanding of teaching and learning in higher education and educational development or organizational change will be an asset.

  • Demonstrated skills in teaching and educational development abilities, including experience facilitating in a sensitive and cross-cultural learning environment;
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, develop, and facilitate workshops independently and in collaboration with others;
  • Ability to work within a team and take the lead on projects;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including demonstrated ability to communicate diplomatically and effectively with a diverse group of faculty, administrators, and staff individually and in group settings in written and verbal communications;
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment, manage time well, and communicate effectively with supervisors, peers, and staff while taking a service-oriented approach and consultative decision-making; and
  • High levels of energy and empathy.
