Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION

Perform, under the responsibility and supervision of a physician, diagnostic and therapeutic tasks to allow the physician to extend his/her services. Preoperative workup of surgical patients, signing consents, obtaining medical clearance, attending huddle, assist in surgical procedures as needed

Within the physician/physician assistant relationship, physician assistants may exercise autonomy in decision making within the constraints of appropriate experience and training. Physician Assistant practice is centered on patient care and may include educational, research and administrative activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Elicit a detailed and accurate medical history, perform a complete physical examination and record all pertinent data.
• Perform and/or interpret and/or order routine diagnostic studies including routine laboratory procedures, common radiological studies and EKG tracings.
• Inform the supervising physician of all changes in the patients' conditions and pertinent diagnostic results.
• Perform therapeutic procedures, including injections, and urinary catheterization, and insertion of intravenous lines.
• Preoperative workup of surgical patients, signing consents, obtaining medical clearance, attending huddle, assist in surgical procedures as needed
• Workup of patients seeking abortion for medication or preparation for surgery
• Perform patient rounds, collect data and write pertinent progress notes on charts.
• Refer to appropriate sub- specialty consultants.
• Counsel patients regarding physical and mental health, as well as provides patient information on nutrition, health promotion, pertinent health education and, if needed continued care.
• Develop management plans in accordance with established protocols in conjunction with the attending physician.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Current New York State registration as a Physician Assistant; or
2. Current limited permit issued by New York State to practice as a Physician Assistant.
