Job Description
Job Title: Surgical Technologist Certified

Experience: At least 4 years of CST experience in ortho, trauma, vascular, robotics, and neuro cases

License: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST)

Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS)

Must-Have: Ability to read, write, and speak English

Description:

The Surgical Technologist Certified functions under the direction of the registered professional nurse.

Assists the healthcare team in providing safe, age-appropriate, and culturally aware patient care.

Has the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform duties within the context of moderate to high acuity surgical cases.

Exhibits an acquisition of additional surgical skills for progressively more difficult cases.

Demonstrates an efficient, organized surgical plan for assigned cases.

Takes initiative to discuss surgical plans with other members of the healthcare team.

Able to troubleshoot instruments and equipment.

Anticipates additional supplies or equipment required for procedures.

Ability to mentor, precept or train in various modalities.

Participates in performance improvement initiatives.

Prepares the operative suite and surgical field to ensure a safe patient care environment.

Maintains the sterile field and watches for other patient safety concerns.

Gathers required instruments and supplies.

Serves as a surgical assistant as needed.

Assists with inventory, ordering, and stocking operating rooms and additional perioperative areas as assigned.

Ensures that the unit complies with standards at all times.

Call or late coverage may be required depending on the facility.

Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures which includes review and utilization of appropriate preference cards.

Assists with room setup, including opening sterile supplies.

Sets up a sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medication/solutions needed for the procedure.

Performs appropriate surgical counts with the circulator.

Actively participates in the procedure pause/time-out.

Scrubs, gowns, and gloves; gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants.

Assists in draping the sterile field.

Passes instruments to surgeon during the procedure maintains an organized back table and operative field.

Anticipates and offers surgeon suggestions throughout the procedure for facilitating cases.

Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique.

Prepares sterile dressings.

Actively participates in post-procedure pause, ensuring proper handling of specimens.

Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization, taking initiative to inform SPD of critical-need instruments.

Applies principles of asepsis to ensure the prevention of infection and safety of patients and employees.

Prepares case carts according to procedure and preference cards.

Reviews the surgical schedule and assists the clinical coordinator with preparation for future cases.

Observes patient's condition and immediately reports any changes or significant findings to the physician and Registered Nurse.

Proactively plans for next steps in the progression of procedure as needed.

Demonstrates an ability to adjust without faltering in emergencies.

Prepares operating room and other areas (as needed) for receiving patients.

Stocks, cleans equipment or storage areas, turns operating room over, orders/requests supplies, prepares instruments for future procedures, and notifies specialty staff regarding needed instrumentation or equipment.

Maintains financial stewardship related to supplies and equipment.

Provides relationship-based patient-centered care under the supervision of the registered nurse.

Practices using current clinical practice standards.

Upholds all organizational policies and procedures and clinical competencies.

Supports evidence-based practice and ethical accountability.

Demonstrates teamwork and collaboration.

Serves as a patient advocate.

Assists other team members with room cleaning.

Prepares room for the next patient.

Assists in transporting patients.

Provides comfort and safety measures for patients.

Participates in performance improvement initiatives.

Seeks opportunities to improve processes and collaborate with the healthcare team.

Maintains a positive attitude and flexibility in assignments.
