General Description
Position is responsible for coordinating, managing, developing, implementing, and monitoring curriculum and instruction for secondary social studies throughout the division. Complex work is performed within specific regulations, departmental objectives, and policies; employee plans own work and coordinates with others as necessary. Contacts are regularly and frequently made at all organizational levels within and outside the department to explain and implement programs and policies; professional judgment is required. The Curriculum Specialist provides leadership for the secondary social studies program through planning professional development opportunities, coordinating and managing school and community events, and leading and facilitating curriculum and instruction development by monitoring and guiding program direction to support teachers, administrators, and families.

Contacts:
Contact with all levels of CCPS personnel and various outside agencies. Collaborates regularly with the Elementary Social Studies Curriculum Specialist.
Work Direction/Supervision:
Provides work direction to secondary social studies teachers and department leaders. This position does not have any direct reports.
Decision Making:
High level of independent decision making is required.
Formal Policy-Setting Responsibilities:
May provide input or recommendations related to policy changes.

Qualifications
Considerable knowledge of the concepts, principles and methodologies of social studies instruction in a public school setting; of current curriculum development, program implementation and planning in social studies, learning theory, recent research, school organization, supervision and available state and local resources; child growth and development, group dynamics and related state and federal regulations. Considerable knowledge of the budget process, fiscal management and the securing of special funding sources for specified instructional areas. Working skill in the use of technology including word processing, spreadsheet and database software (Word, Power Point, Excel, Google WorkSpace preferred). Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply regulations; coordinate complex programs and activities and provide direction to and evaluate a diversified professional staff. Demonstrated ability to secure, monitor, and evaluate social studies programs; to develop instructional goals; design and deliver instruction and assess students' learning. Demonstrated ability to organize, schedule, and monitor work assignments and to train and advise staff. Demonstrated ability in decision-making, problem analysis, conflict resolution, interpersonal relationships, program management, research and planning and to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Requirements
Must hold a valid Virginia teaching license with endorsements in the curriculum content area. Must have teaching experience and/or any equivalent experience or training which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Valid VA Driver's License. This position requires the incumbent to drive. In accordance with Policy 5431, an employee who occupies the position and is assigned a district-owned or leased motor vehicle will be subject to annual driving checks and must maintain acceptable records pursuant to the standards set forth in the policy.
Preferred:
Master's Degree in either the endorsement area, in curriculum and instruction, or in administration and supervision.

Essential Job Functions:
- Facilitates curriculum development for secondary social studies and coordinates the proposed curriculum through the approval process. Provides assistance and monitors curriculum program implementation throughout the county. Manages and monitors online curriculum documents. Develops guidelines for program and materials implementation. Aligns curricular materials, technology, and assessments with departmental goals and objectives. Analyzes standards and designs instruction and assessments aligned with standards.
- Coordinates and develops the Local Alternative Assessments for certain middle school courses.
- Uses assessment data to make instructional decisions related to curriculum and instruction. Recommends and implements improvements to curriculum, instruction, and assessment based on ongoing analysis of results.
- Reviews and identifies instructional materials; manages adoption of new instructional materials in accordance with county guidelines and procedures; provides staff development opportunities for teachers and administrators based upon approved instructional materials and resources in alignment with standards of learning.
- Provides professional learning opportunities for teachers and administrators on a variety of topics, including using approved instructional materials and resources in alignment with secondary social studies Standards of Learning. Provides orientation on instructional resources for newly-appointed teachers. Recommends subject area professional development for administrators and teachers; recommends licensure renewal opportunities.
- Visits classrooms for teaching support and consultation; monitors instructional programs in the schools; conducts routine evaluations of the effectiveness of social studies instructional programs; provides communications to teachers; maintains CCPS Portal site for social studies.
- Coordinates divisionwide social studies events, including Rule of Law and Model County Government.
- Serves as liaison to State Department of Education and other professional educational organizations on matters related to social studies; ensures compliance with all applicable state and federal regulations and accreditation standards.
- Plans and supports summer school courses with appropriate digital resources.
- Assists in the development of the budget and the monitoring of expenditures; ensures compliance with financial management guidelines and requirements.
- Works collaboratIvely with field trip transportation dept and risk management to plan and facilitate transportation for social studies students to county and district events.
- Demonstrates commitment to improving professional competence.
- May perform other duties as assigned.
