Public Health Division, Southwest Region is comprised of eight counties and works to promote health and wellness, improve health outcomes, and assure safety net services for all people in New Mexico.
Why does the job exist?
This position will plan, organize and implement comprehensive activities to identify risk for Hepatitis B (Hep B) and perinatal cases by reviewing lab reports and maintain surveillance, educate, and refer to public health and private healthcare providers for preventive, acute and chronic Hep B, C or A infections. Also provides tracking of perinatal Hep B infections in newborns throughout the Southwest Region (SW Region). Position will also work to improve immunization rates by working with Southwest Region local health offices. All applicants for this position must be licensed in accordance with the Nursing Practice Act 61-3-2 through 61-3-31 NMSA 1978 and 16.12.1 through 16.12.20 NMAC, as applicable. Interviews are anticipated to be conducted within two weeks of closing date.
How does it get done?
This position will be responsible for:
- Performing case management by ensuring 100% of infants born to Hepatitis B carriers are immunized within the required timeframe and performing tracking to assure completion of serology testing.
- Providing support to Southwest Region by conducting surveillance and case investigations with all Hep B cases, and those co-infected with Hep C.
- Providing support to increase immunization rates within Southwest Region by collaborating with Southwest Region local health offices.
- Providing support to other regional programs such as Nurse Epidemiologist, Disease Prevention Team, and/or Acute Disease Response Team as needed.
- Participate in planning and/or implementation of community services/outreach as identified by community needs or provider needs.

This position will serve the New Mexico demographic population in Southwest Region.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate for this position must possess and maintain a current New Mexico Registered Nursing license or eligible for licensure in accordance with Nursing practice Act 61-3-2 through 61-3-31 NMSA 1978 and 16-12-1 through 61-12-20 NMAC, as applicable.
The ideal candidate has experience:
- Delivering highly specialized public health services to the people in New Mexico.
- Ensuring adherence to clinical policies, protocols and procedures.
- Dealing with lack of resources and/or identifying those limited resources in areas outside of the SW Region.
- Overcoming barriers when immunizations are declined, and Hep B clients cannot be tracked from completion of vaccine series.
Minimum Qualification
Must possess a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in New Mexico, or eligibility for such licensure in accordance with New Mexico requirements, or eligibility for a temporary license issued for employment at a specific institution in New Mexico and three (3) years of experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Successful completion of HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act), and successful completion of CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvements Act) trainings are required within sixty (60) days of employment. Position will require Blood-borne pathogen training and successful completion of CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) course within thirty (30) days as condition of continued employment. Must possess current New Mexico Registered Nursing license or eligible for licensure in accordance with Nursing practice Act 61-3-2 through 61-3-31 NMSA 1978 and 16-12-1 through 61-12-20 NMAC, as applicable.
Working Conditions
Services are provided in a clinic, auxiliary and community sites, and occasionally in the client's home with potential exposure to communicable diseases and computer usage for a variety of clinic and office functions. Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage with extended periods of office noise, bending, standing and lifting. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Services are provided in a clinic with diverse racial and ethnic populations, many who do not speak the English language. Travel to satellite offices, meetings, training sessions, and special events with the occasional overnight stay is required.
