The mission of Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR) is to provide high quality, humane care for research and teaching animals at Indiana University Bloomington, and ensure compliance with federal laws and guidelines and campus policies related to animal use.

LAR is responsible for managing the campus core animal facilities and providing medical care and oversight for all campus facilities in which animals are maintained for research and teaching.

Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities
  • Provides animal health care to animals used in research and teaching by performing clinical rounds, communicating with labs, and maintaining animal health records.
  • Assesses and treats animal health emergencies.
  • Oversees the animal health surveillance program and collects and processes samples as necessary.
  • Reviews documentation related to clinical cases while documenting and updating the health history of animals.
  • Consults and instructs researchers.
  • Ensures compliance with university policy; state and federal laws and regulations related to the use of animals in research.
  • Assists with IACUC protocol review.
General Responsibilities
  • Provides direct veterinary care and managerial advice through examination, diagnoses, treatment, and consultation on clinical behavioral or husbandry issues with all animals located on the campus.
  • Recommends and trains on animal handling, laboratory techniques, sedation, analgesia, anesthesia, surgical and post-surgical care, and other procedures.
  • Consults and instructs to researchers in animal care and use including assistance in the design and/or implementation of specialized procedures, behavioral testing and breeding protocols.
  • Directs a campus-wide program of veterinary care and preventive medicine Directing, and developing as needed, training programs in animal care for research staff.
  • Informs and advises university leadership regarding issues and policies pertaining to animal care, use and welfare.
  • Collaborates with safety offices (Biosafety, Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, and Radiation Safety) and Facilities Management as well as with industry partners and animal resource vendors.
  • Ensures compliance with university policy; state and federal laws and regulations related to the use and care of vertebrate animals, as well as ensuring consistency with industry standards.
  • Oversees all operational and financial aspects of the University's Laboratory Animal Resources (including budgeting and staffing).
  • Assesses and treats animal health emergencies.
  • Manages surgical supplies, pharmacy inventory, and screening of shipments containing animals to and from facilities.
  • Determines diagnostics, collects, processes, and ships samples for health assessments.
  • Reviews documentation related to clinical cases while documenting and updating the health history of animals.
  • Develops and manages departmental policies, procedures, and processes related to animal medical care.
Qualifications

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.

EDUCATION

Required
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine with training or experience in laboratory animal medicine or research.
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 2 years of supervisory and laboratory animal medicine and surgery experience.
  • 5 years of experience in private clinical practice or laboratory animal science and medicine
Preferred
  • 2 years working with laboratory animals
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required
  • License to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Indiana
  • Eligible to pursue board certification by the College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM).

  • Possess extensive knowledge of federal laws, regulations and guidelines governing the use of animals in research and teaching
  • Possesses knowledge of animal medicine and surgery in a research setting

Working Conditions / Demands

This position requires the ability to move about for long periods of time, perform repetitive movements, and operate equipment, tools, or controls. It also requires the ability to move items weighing up to 25 pounds. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential duties with or without an accommodation.

Advertised Salary

$167,000 - $180,000 per year dependent upon experience.
