Position Overview
The Utah Sports Commission's Sports Development Director is responsible for recruiting and managing youth, amateur, national, international, and Olympic/Paralympic events to Utah, leveraging those events to bring significant economic impact and global media value to the state.

The Utah Sports Commission is a 501c3 nonprofit organization created in 20xx to be a catalyst for Utah in its Olympic Legacy efforts and to enhance Utah's economy, global image, and quality of life through the attraction, promotion, and development of national and international sports. Since the 2002 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, the Utah Sports Commission has attracted over 1,100 major events to the state, resulting in more than $4 billion in economic impacts.

Compensation will be based on experience and qualifications. The benefits package includes healthcare, a 401k retirement plan, and vacation/time off. The Utah Sports Commission will also consider performance-based compensation on sponsorship and sales as may be appropriate.

- Recruit and manage youth, amateur, national, international, and Olympic/Paralympic events to come to Utah, leveraging those events to bring significant economic impact and global media value to the state.
- Track, catalog, and publicize the economic impact and media value of hosted events, as well as other key metrics.
- Develop and manage a sports development strategic plan with measurable objectives and outcomes, including a master events list, timelines, and other related information to help track, inform, and coordinate with staff.
- Assist staff in the staging and hosting of Utah Sports Commission-produced events, including the Utah Championship (PGA's Korn Ferry Tour) and the Governor's State of Sports Awards.
- Assist the president and CEO in various other areas as requested and deemed appropriate.
- Oversee the Manager of Sports Development.
- Ensure that the Utah Sports Commission is well positioned with other key constituents in the youth, amateur, national, international, and Olympic/Paralympic sectors that may assist in recruiting these events to Utah.
- Develop a working knowledge of Utah sports events venues, establishing strong working partnerships.
- Network with and recruit additional strategic partners to bring more sports and related events to Utah.
- Develop a plan to recruit and manage a strong base of volunteers for events.
- Assist staff with ongoing events as deemed appropriate by the President and CEO, including strategic, sport, and other initiatives.
- Help build Utah's sports brand and enhance Utah as "The State of Sport," by attracting, expanding and retaining key events.
- Help augment and assist the Utah Sports Commission in fulfilling its mission, charter, and vision under the direction of the President and CEO.
General Oversight/Responsibilities and Duties
- Management - Proactively manage and assist staff with organizational requirements, including budgets, reports, accounting, and other policies and procedures as appropriate.
- Community - Enhance the Sports Commission's brand and image, and help represent the Sports Commission at sports events and other activities. When appropriate, assist the President and CEO, and staff, with the public sector and community partners who can help the sports commission meet its mission.
- Self Drive and Initiative - Must have problem-solving and strategic skills, be a self-starter and be proactive due to the dynamic nature of the job and the many spaces in which the sports commission functions.
- Team Player - Being a team player and being able to work closely with the sports commission staff and team, along with all our various partners, is key to success in the role.
Qualifications
- Minimum of ten years of related work experience in upper management in the areas of sports, event management, sponsorship development, and marketing.
- Demonstrated ability to manage related events and activities.
- Professional, collegiate, or Olympic-related sports background and experience is preferred.
- Experience in brand management and strategic application of website, digital, and social media is helpful.
- Experience in business management, accounting, and budgeting is essential.
- Required to work some evenings, weekends, and holidays on select sporting sports or related events.
- Strong communication and leadership skills with an ability to effectively work with multiple teams.
- Positive attitude
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree or higher in marketing, business, sports, or other related fields.
- Participative work style with an ability to receive feedback and to work creatively, effectively, and collaboratively in a fast-paced and varied work environment.
- Mature interpersonal style with an ability to establish ongoing relationships and interact well with a diverse range of people.
- Strategic thinking and analytical skills with a high standard of quality, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines.
- Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
- Database management experience and proficiency in office productivity software is helpful.
Environmental and Physical Job Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors in all temperatures and weather extremes.
- Ability to lift 20 pounds.
- Must be able to stand on feet for extended time.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision depth perception, and ability to focus.
- Specific hearing abilities required by this job include the ability to converse with others in a normal conversation.
- Balancing, bending, climbing, kneeling, walking, pushing, reaching above shoulders, and sitting.
