Position Title: Senior Surveillance Officer

Department: Market Surveillance

Region: Toronto, Montreal, Calgary or Vancouver

Status: Permanent Full-time (Hybrid)

Core Responsibilities:

  • T+1 Analysis: Analyze trading patterns and activity retrospectively to identify breaches of trading rules, including potential illegal insider trading and market manipulation.
  • Identify opportunities to optimize real-time alerts for both real time and next-day reviews.
  • Technology and Tools Development: Collaborate on developing detection tools and analytics for evolving trading patterns and exchange facilities.
  • Provide expertise in managing large data sets and developing reports using tools such as Excel, Power BI, Python, and SQL.
  • Review Listed Issuer Press Releases to assess materiality, balance, and compliance with exchange rules and securities legislation.
  • Assist colleagues in the real-time surveillance function with calibration of alerts and alert development.
  • Monitor trading activity to ensure compliance with Universal Market Integrity Rules (UMIR) using surveillance systems.
  • Research to keep abreast of technical innovations in our industry with an expectation this will lead to proposing opportunities for us to explore to enhance and improve our systems and processes with a primary focus on the surveillance alerts.
  • Industry and Internal Collaboration
  • Communicate daily with dealers, issuers, and marketplaces on a variety of topics that include market manipulation reviews, issuer timely disclosure, and marketplace disruption.
  • Assist marketplaces with market quality issues.
  • Stay current on industry trends through ongoing education and seminars.


Skills and Competencies:

Must-Haves

Technical Expertise:

  • Advanced knowledge of Excel: Pivot Tables, Power Query, VBA.
  • Proficiency in Power BI, Python, and SQL for data analysis, visualization, and tool development.


Professional Experience:

  • 7-10 years in trading, compliance, supervision, or technology roles within a trading environment.
  • Understanding of trading and marketplace rules.


Analytical and Decision-Making Skills:

  • Confidence and experience working with large data sets.
  • Ability to analyze trading activity and make real-time and T+1 decisions.


Other Essential Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to thrive under pressure and meet demanding deadlines with sound judgment.
  • Detail-oriented and capable of working both independently and as part of a team.


Nice-to-Haves

  • Familiarity with various asset classes (derivatives, fixed income, repos, FX). Completion of industry courses such as CSC preferred.
  • Experience with market structure and quality issues.
