JOB CHARACTERISTICS

The Associate Chief Financial Officer and Senior Director of Financial Planning and Analysis (Senior Director of FPA) serves as the principal deputy to the Associate Dean and Chief Financial Officer (ADCFO) of the School of Medicine (SoM). This senior leadership role requires exceptional expertise in financial strategy, data-driven decision-making, compliance with advanced financial reporting standards (GAAP), and execution of cross-functional projects of strategic importance to the institution. The Senior Director of FPA holds responsibility for financial strategy, analysis, and reporting for a $2.1 billion annual operating budget.

As a key institutional leader, the Senior Director of FPA collaborates with SoM leadership, including the Vice Dean for Finance and Administration, department chairs, and executive leadership across UW Medicine and the broader University. This role provides essential direction to align financial systems and strategies with institutional goals, driving efficient resource allocation and fiscal sustainability. The Senior Director exercises delegated decision-making authority and advises on critical financial issues to optimize resources, improve operational effectiveness, and mitigate risk across a complex, multifaceted academic medical enterprise.

The Senior Director of FPA uses their robust communication skills to effectively collaborate with other senior leaders across the Dean's office, UW Medicine and the SoM. They are a good listener who can process information, find solutions and resolve issues. This person is a leader who can motivate other financial professionals, delegate responsibility and develop process improvements. The Senior Director of FPA can juggle multiple, shifting priorities for various clients, while ensuring timely responses to their needs. This position will lead a group of ten to twelve finance professionals and is expected to take leadership roles in strategic SoM projects and represent the School in University-wide committees.

This position has direct responsibility towards financial planning and reporting for UW Medicine. The decisions made by the Senior Director of FPA, in tandem with the ADCFO, have both short, and long-term impact to the school and its financial health.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Oversight and Leadership - 45%
Develop a five-year financial outlook using the Adaptive Planning tool as part of the annual budget process.
Ensure resource allocation aligns with institutional goals and anticipates future needs, such as program growth, changes in clinical revenue, shifts in research priorities, or evolving educational demands.
Develop effective, timely, informative, and actionable financial and management reports for all units of the school, including academic departments.
Manage a team of motivated finance professionals and lead them towards industry best practices in accounting, budgeting and planning, and developing new solutions for financial reporting. These teams are responsible for the core financial functions of the School of Medicine and interact closely with the University, hospitals, and practice plans.
Analyze historical trends, projecting future revenues and expenditures, and identifying potential challenges or opportunities.
Responsible for strategic analysis and response to various University and UW Medicine Stakeholders regarding an annual operating budget of 2.1 billion.

The budgetary scope includes 31 academic departments, numerous unique centers and institutes, and central support areas within the Dean's Office
Provide guidance to leadership on organizational structures, financial frameworks, and workflows, aiming for standardization, scalability, enhanced compliance, data integrity, and cost-effectiveness.

Strategic Analysis and Stakeholder Management - 30%
Collaborate with other senior leaders within the Dean's Office to identify improvement opportunities, develop process enhancement plans, and prioritize initiatives related to the School's financial processes.
Serve as principal deputy to ADCFO and a trusted advisor to other senior leaders to optimize budget process, forecasting, navigating complex financial landscapes, evaluating trade-offs, and crafting strategies to address emerging challenges.
Interact with key finance stakeholders within the School, such as department leadership and fiscal staff, to ensure effective communication and change management strategies across various units within the School and the University.
Recommend additional resources needed for project success.

Project Management - 25%
Acts as project director overseeing various Workday initiatives, including ownership and optimization of Workday chart of accounts within the broader University system and framework.
Develop communication and training materials around various financial business processes.
On behalf of the ADCFO and VDAF work on key/strategic special projects for both the SoM and the broader University. These projects will focus on the high-level mechanics of the School of Medicine finance institution.
Represent SoM on critical University-wide committees, influencing policy development and institutional decision-making.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Master's degree in accounting, business administration, healthcare administration or related field and at least 7 years of relevant experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Detailed knowledge of accounting, budgeting & planning and financial reporting at a research-intensive university and/or academic medical centers
Functional understanding of excel, access and other standard computer-based tools.
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
Significant experience with change management and succeeding in a matrixed reporting environment
Commitment to implementing best practices and influencing others through engaged and energetic leadership style.
Familiarity with, and current knowledge of, federal, state, and local laws concerning financial activities.
Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as critical values for the UW SoM, UW Medicine and the University.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
15 or more years of relevant experience.
CPA Certification or relevant accounting experience gained in work experience.
Previous experience in a senior finance/budgeting/accounting leadership role.
Familiarity with University rules, regulations, directives, policies, and procedures concerning financial activities.
