Job Description:

- Provide direct patient care to pediatric through geriatric populations.
- Address psychosocial, physical, and general aspects of care related to the surgical environment.
- Assist with the maintenance of surgical equipment and inventory.
- Participate in performance improvement activities.
- Assess the operating room for equipment functioning and readiness; obtain supplies for individual cases.
- Ensure all appropriate needs of the surgical operating team are met.
- Monitor, position, and assist the patient during the procedure.
- Approach patients in a kind, gentle, and friendly manner.
- Respond to patients' inappropriate behavior in a therapeutic manner.
- Take appropriate actions and document responses to anxiety and distress.
- Provide explanations and verbal reassurances to patients consistently.
- Adapt procedures to meet individual needs of pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
- Identify physical symptoms and changes, and take timely and appropriate action.
- Assess the cardiorespiratory system for changes and provide appropriate treatment.
- Direct and assist in maintenance and handling of special equipment and instruments.
- Observe behavior and physiological changes due to medications, take appropriate actions and document.
- Position patients safely and protect bony prominences.
- Prep and drape patients correctly for all procedures.
- Maintain medical/surgical asepsis during treatments and special procedures.
- Administer medications and parenteral fluids safely according to hospital policies and procedures.
- Coordinate and supervise patient care; provide explanations and teaching to patients and families as necessary.
- Ensure sterilization and proper handling of instruments.
- Accurately record, handle, and label specimens.
- Ensure the pre-op checklist is complete before the patient is taken into the surgical suite.
- Respond appropriately to patient emergencies.
- Maintain thorough documentation of patient care.
- Communicate effectively with the surgical team, including accounting for all instruments during and after procedures.
- Establish and maintain effective communication and good working relationships with colleagues.
- Understand and assist in implementing core measures and quality improvement activities.
- Adhere to dress code standards and department policies.
- Complete annual educational requirements and attend scheduled Nursing Education Days and in-services.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient records and communicate the facility's mission, ethics, and goals effectively.
- Represent the organization positively and comply with all organizational policies.
