Job Summary
The MBTA's Superintendent of Bridge and Structure Maintenance ensures the efficiency of the Condition Assessment Program by leading a diverse team, including supervisors, vendor-managed contracts, and skilled trade staff. The role includes strict compliance with MBTA rules, effective management of vendor as well as materials contracts, and overseeing maintenance planning for the structural infrastructure.
The Superintendent of Bridge & Structures Maintenance will plan, schedule, direct and supervise the personnel and resources involved in performing inspection, repair, maintenance, installation, alteration and refurbishing work to the bridges and structures within the Division's jurisdiction. The Superintendent of Bridge & Structures Maintenance will also arrange for the requisition and delivery of all materials and equipment necessary to complete the Division work; and ensure that all inventory levels, equipment, materials, and facilities are protected and maintained in a safe operating condition.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide leadership, guidance and supervision to bridge inspection teams and their associated members, ensuring each has the appropriate training to inspire professional growth.
- Establish and maintain a high standard of structural inspections and reporting; ensure team members are properly trained, and expectations are understood across the inspection teams.
- Prepare reports, schedules, correspondence, and other required documentation.
- Process invoices, material/service requisitions, vouchers, and other documents.
- Review the work of employees and contractors; ensure MBTA standards are met or exceeded for all work and develop recommendations for improvements.
- Coordinate work assignments of personnel and ensure accurate reporting of labor and material record keeping.
- Manage inspection team assignments, ensuring equity across the teams; plan accordingly to ensure vacancies are filled and teams optimized
- Ensure budgetary goals are met and that all work is performed in a timely and cost-effective manner.
- Drive a company or personal vehicle to inspect work sites, transport crews or equipment, and/or to assist at emergencies and/or events as needed.
- Ability to climb stairs or ladders or to ride lifts, at height, to complete required inspections.
- With assistance, ability to lift and carry ladders or other equipment, as required to complete inspections.
- Respond to each inquiry, whether from a customer, vendor, or coworker in a courteous and professional manner.
- Uphold the rights and interests of the Authority while building and maintaining an effective relationship with employees.
- Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications
- A high school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) from an accredited institution with the ability to comprehend, communicate and respond to instructions, orders, signs, notices, inquiries, etc. in English
- Nine (9) years of experience in bridge and structure inspection, maintenance, and repair.
- Two (2) years of supervisory/leadership experience in a related capacity
- Successful completion of the FHWA/NHI 130055 Inspection of In-Service Bridges course.
- Successful completion of the FHWA/NHI 130078 Bridge Inspection Techniques for NSTMs course.
- Demonstrated field knowledge of bridge and structure repairs.
- Effective organizational and analytical skills.
- The ability to use Word, Excel, Database, PeopleSoft, or Main Frame applications.
- Have excellent customer service and conflict resolution skills.
- With assistance, ability to lift and carry ladders or other equipment, as required to complete inspections.
- A valid drivers license in accordance with MBTA policy.
- The ability to supervise and work effectively with a diverse workforce.

- Bachelor's degree in construction management, Structural Engineering, or Civil Engineering from an accredited college
