JOB SUMMARY: The High School Principal is the instructional leader of the school community, responsible for establishing an instructional vision and a focused plan for improving student achievement; monitoring and supervising instruction; promoting collaboration in professional learning communities; supporting teachers in improving their instructional practice; creating a community of continuous learning for all staff and students; and fostering a culture of high expectations for all students. In addition, the principal is charged with building strong partnerships with families and community, creating a safe, supportive school climate, and effectively managing operational, technical and staff issues to promote instructional progress. The principal is also a member of the Orting School District leadership team. The principal works collaboratively with the district leadership team to advance student learning while embedding the district's Strategic Plan and the school's Continuous School Improvement Plan throughout their work.

  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    This job description is intended to describe the nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this position.   • Implement and integrate the district's Strategic Plan and the school's Continuous School Improvement Plan into daily operations to drive progress in student learning.
  • Develop a clear instructional vision and focus on student achievement to guide the school's educational goals.
  • Implement strategies to continuously improve student outcomes and academic performance.
  • Oversee the teaching and learning process, ensuring instructional methods meet high standards and are aligned with the school's goals.
  • Encourage and foster collaboration among staff through professional learning communities to share best practices and enhance instructional quality.
  • Provide guidance and support to teachers and foster an environment where you help staff to build agency, improve their instructional practices and achieve professional growth.
  • Cultivate a school culture that holds all students to high academic, behavioral, and social expectations where equity, agency and dignity are foundational elements.
  • Engage and collaborate with families, community members, and local organizations to enhance the school's impact and resources for students.
  • Ensure the school environment is physically and emotionally safe, nurturing, and conducive to learning for all students.
  • Effectively address and manage day-to-day operational, technical, and staff elements to maintain smooth functioning and instructional progress.
  • Work collaboratively with the district leadership team to align the school's practices with district-wide goals and priorities.
  • Collect, analyze, and utilize student performance data to guide decision-making and improve academic outcomes.
  • Manage and support staff recruitment, professional development, and performance evaluation to ensure a high-functioning team.
  • Oversee the school budget and engage the community to ensure a supportive learning environment.

  • REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
    Knowledge of best practices in educational leadership, school management, and instructional strategies.
    Knowledge of curriculum design, implementation, and evaluation, as well as current trends in educational standards and assessments.
    Knowledge of effective teaching methodologies and student-centered instructional practices to support diverse learners.
    Skill in communicating effectively, orally and in writing.
    Skill in navigating common challenges to effectively meet customer service needs.
    Ability to make effective decisions regarding student safety, special education, equity, and other policies to ensure the school adheres to regulations and best practices.
    Ability to analyze academic data and student performance metrics to guide decisions related to curriculum, instruction, and school improvement.
    Ability to understand of school finance, budgeting processes, and resource management to support instructional priorities.
    Ability to comply with applicable district, local, State, and federal laws, as well as policies and practices.
    Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
    Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
    Ability to manage work time and tasks efficiently.
    Ability to lead, mentor, and support the professional growth of staff, including teachers, support staff, and administrators.

    Ability to serve the varied needs of people with cultural sensitivity and relevance.

    Education and Experience:
    Master's degree in educational administration and a minimum three (3) years of progressively responsible related experience or, any combination of targeted job-related education and experience which provides the applicant with the requisite knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the work and that meets applicable requirements of the position may be considered.

    REQUIRED LICENSES/SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
    Prospective employees who are likely to have unsupervised access to children, disabled persons or vulnerable adults during the course of employment will undergo a background check clearance based on the laws declared by RCW Chapter 43.43.830. Must complete a Sexual Misconduct Disclosure process with results satisfactory to the district.

    REPORTS TO: This position reports to and is evaluated by the district's Superintendent or designee.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:
    The physical demands described within this job description are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job, with or without reasonable accommodation.
    This position requires concentration to detail. Incumbent will likely experience frequent interruptions, while still being required to meet inflexible deadlines. Will experience demands from a variety of situations and people, including students, parents, community, and staff. Will deal with angry or distraught people from time to time. Frequent focus on a computer screen for extended periods of time may occur. Sitting, walking, bending, twisting and standing are part of the daily physical functions of the job. Lifting up to 15 pounds and/or transferring weighted items to equipment for transport occurs occasionally. Will be required to attend evening meetings and activities. Some meetings may fall on the weekend. Will be required to operate a motor vehicle on public roads or find an alternative mode of transportation which supports the incumbent's punctual attendance at district related activities.

    EMPLOYEE UNIT: OASA (Principals)

    FSLA: Overtime Exempt (Salaried)

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
    Work year: July 1 - June 30
    Base Salary: 2024-25 $169,052 - $182,050 DOE; 2025-26 IPD + 2% will be added
    Professional Responsibility Stipend (PRS): 10 days at per diem (based on 218 days)
    Wellness Stipend
    Twenty-six (26) annual vacation days; cash-out up to six (6) days annually
    Thirteen (13) paid holidays
    Four (4) annual personal days accumulative to six (6); cash-out two (2) days annually
    Twelve (12) annual sick days
    Professional Development of $2,000 per year
    Eligible for District paid professional dues
    Cell phone stipend

    Eligibility for benefits is determined by the number of hours an employee is anticipated to work during the school year (September 1 through August 31). Employees anticipated to work 630 hours or more in a year are eligible for the following benefits: medical, dental, vision, retirement, life insurance, long-term disability and the employee assistance program.

Benefit eligible employees also qualify to optionally participate in deferred compensation/403B plans, dependent care flexible spending/health savings accounts, and additional life insurance and/or added long-term disability coverage through employee contributions. Sick leave, vacation, personal leave, and any paid holidays are aligned with bargaining agreements by association, as listed on our website.

    Other benefits include VEBA, which is a Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) and serves as a way to contribute dollars on a pre-tax basis for out of pocket benefits costs, whether it be for medical, dental or vision premiums, or any other out of pocket medical expenses. This benefit is available, based on the outcome of annual voting of employees by group.
