Description of Work Unit

The Department of Clinical Sciences mission is to assure the health and productivity of animals to meet societal needs through high quality educational programs for professional veterinary medical students, graduate veterinarians, and the public through a faculty and veterinary medical center of excellence, and to advance and disseminate comparative biomedical knowledge in an environment of interdisciplinary collaboration.

The Avian, Exotics, and Zoologic Medicine service offers high quality diagnostics and treatment for companion, avian, and exotic species. They also partner with public zoological parks and aquariums, as well as wildlife rehabilitators to provide care to wildlife. The unit consists of faculty, house officers, and dedicated technicians. It is housed within the small animal hospital with dedicated hospital space however works across campuses to meet patient needs.

Position Summary

The Department of Clinical Sciences at Colorado State University seeks applications for a 12-month tenure track Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor in Avian, Exotic, and Zoological Medicine Service. The Avian, Exotic, and Zoological Medicine Service is responsible for the management of the AEZ caseload within the Veterinary Health System (VHS) as well as collaborating with partners in the Rocky Mountain Region. This position will support both clinical and didactic teaching in the DVM program, graduate student/resident and fellow training, and research in the area of Avian, Exotic, and Zoological Medicine. The position also supports an important clinical service in the VHS both in terms of client service and revenue generation. This faculty position will provide up to 26 weeks of clinical service. Additionally, we expect the successful candidate will develop an independent impactful research program and participate in collaborative research. The approximate commitment to clinical responsibilities will range from 22-26 weeks
  • DVM or equivalent veterinary professional degree
  • Diplomate of the American College of Zoological Medicine

Associate Professor - Tenure track

The approximate commitment to clinical responsibilities will range from 18-22 weeks
  • DVM or equivalent veterinary professional degree
  • Diplomate of the American College of Zoological Medicine
  • Evidence of maintaining an independent or collaborative research program.
  • 5 years of experience at the Assistant Professor rank or equivalent

Full Professor - Tenure track

The approximate commitment to clinical responsibilities will range from 18-22 weeks
  • DVM or equivalent veterinary professional degree
  • Diplomate of the American College of Zoological Medicine
  • 5 years of experience at the Associate Professor rank or equivalent
  • Evidence of maintaining an independent and collaborative research program


Preferred Job Qualifications

Assistant/Associate/Full Professor - Tenure track
  • Experience in instruction of DVM students
  • Experience with mentorship of clinical fellows and other specialists in training
  • Evidence of dedication to the advancement of the field of non-traditional species
  • MS or PhD and/or evidence of success in developing and or maintaining an independent research program

  • Clinical Service: Provide 18-26 weeks of clinical activity, as outlined above, in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Provide clinical support and primary case management at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital throughout the year.
  • Outreach: Provide phone and/or email consultation for veterinarians in Colorado and other states. Develop and participate in continuing education programs for veterinarians, both at Colorado State University and other locations.
  • Administrative: Participate in Departmental, College, and University administrative committees as well as active participation in the organization and implementation of the goals for the Avian, Exotic, and Zoological Medicine Service/Section of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
