Alberta Health Services and the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (FOMD), University of Alberta are recruiting a Pediatric Ophthalmologist. The Department's vision is to lead patient-centered eye care through outstanding and integrated service, education and research.
The University of Alberta seeks a candidate with a proven track record of publication in peer reviewed journals. Research and clinical teaching experience is essential. Interest in resident training is of significant importance.
The Department of Ophthalmology's Eye Institute of Alberta (EIA) is a Center of Excellence for all levels of ophthalmic care. It serves a population of over 3 million people in the Edmonton region, the northern areas of Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan as well as the Northwest and Yukon Territories. The hub for the EIA is the Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH). The eye clinic in the Stollery Children's hospital is one of the busiest in Canada, with >11,000 visits/year. You will be joining 3 pediatric ophthalmologists as well as other subspecialists that work in the clinic. The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences consists of over 40 staff ophthalmologists who work as physicians and surgeons, with teaching appointments within the FOMD at the University of Alberta. The University of Alberta Ophthalmology Residency program is highly regarded nationally and internationally, and is one of the department's great strengths. Current areas of research strength include clinical trials, ocular genetics, and tele-ophthalmology.
Job Description
Clinical Practice: Full time pediatric ophthalmology practice; one day per week (average) at the Stollery Eye Clinic and the remainder will be community-based
Surgical Practice: A minimum of two operating days per month will be provided in the Edmonton Zone, with at least one of those days at the Stollery Hospital OR. The operating time will be shared with the other pediatric Ophthalmologists in the zone.
Call Responsibilities: The successful candidate will join the Ophthalmology on-call schedule where pediatric and adult duties are shared between ophthalmologists in the Edmonton Zone. The successful applicant is also expected to participate in retinopathy of prematurity screening of neonates at the Stollery hospital. There is a requirement to be on-site at RAH for on-call days.
Teaching and Research: Regular teaching of Pediatric Ophthalmology for medical students and ophthalmology residents is required. Teaching will be enabled through an appointment as a Clinical Academic Colleague within the University of Alberta FOMD.
Committee Work: It is expected that the successful candidate will assist in improving the lives of patients, learners and ophthalmologists in Edmonton by volunteering to participate on a variety of committees.
Research:The successful candidate will participate in eye care and ocular disease research and act as a mentor for learners including fellows, residents and medical students.
Required qualifications include a MD, certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Ophthalmology, or equivalent, and a minimum of one year fellowship training in Pediatric Ophthalmology. Applicants must be eligible for licensure in the province of Alberta. Please provide a letter of eligibility from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).The successful candidate will have medical and surgical experience and expertise in the identification and treatment of eye diseases for pediatric patients. Additional training in intraocular surgery, including pediatric glaucoma and cataract would be an asset. An interest in adult strabismus would also be advantageous.
Applicants must be licensed in good standing, or eligible for licensure, with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA). Candidates will have completed a residency in ophthalmology. Interest in and background pertaining to resident training is a plus.
