The role

McMillan Vantage is hiring a full-time member of our Ottawa-based Government Relations team to start at a mutually agreed upon date. The successful candidate has spent three - six years in government relations, with expertise in federal lobbying, campaigns, public policy development and legislative affairs. We specifically seek those who can lobby federal designated public office holders per the Lobbying Act and the Lobbyists' Code of Conduct.

Consultants lead much of their day-to-day work with their clients as part of a team. You must be a trusted strategist, excellent advocate, impactful writer, detail-oriented editor, and creative thinker. Using these skills, they jump into new projects enthusiastically, identifying opportunities to work with your colleagues to deliver results.

The responsibilities

This individual is a highly organized team player with a network of public affairs contacts commensurate with the stage of their career. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Advance policy and legislative priorities through direct lobbying (applicants must be able to register federally)
  • Advance client needs and work plans on a day-to-day basis with support from both senior and junior team members
  • Develop a portfolio of federal public affairs clients across industry verticals (sectoral expertise is recognized but not a necessity)
  • Create and implement government relations strategies with input from your clients and colleagues
  • Provide advice and recommendations to navigate legislative, political and regulatory risk on behalf of companies, organizations and non-profits
  • Develop written content for clients such as government relations presentations, messaging, policy briefs, contact plans, backgrounders and Q&As
  • Take direction on writing first drafts and edit written content from others, ensuring quality control across client work and business development proposals
  • Contribute to the development of customized business development proposals
  • Coordinate and support meetings with governments while adhering to all lobbying restrictions
  • Apply knowledge of the Canadian public policy process and economy to drive McMillan Vantage new business development


The qualifications and competencies

  • 3-6 years of professional experience with an undergraduate and/or Master's degree
  • Proactive and positive attitude with client service skills as outlined in The Vantage Way
  • Proven experience working independently with strong time and project management skills
  • Flexibility and eagerness to think critically and show initiative in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent verbal, writing and editing skills in English (French is an asset)
  • Understanding of the changing Canadian political and media landscapes
  • Understanding of the legislative and public policy process in Canada
  • Ability to manage several projects to meet tight deadlines
  • Intermediate roles demonstrating leadership within political campaigns and/or public policy advocacy will be an asset
