The purpose of this position is to oversee daily operations of the Recreation Division by leading, planning, organizing, maintaining, and managing activities, facilities, and services, developing, and implementing policies and procedures related to development, implementation, administration, and management of comprehensive recreation programs and services. Other duties include the preparation of the Recreation Division budget, and monitoring related expenditures; managing and evaluating the work of subordinates.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Communicates the recreation activities by informing the general public, other City employees, vendors, management, contractors, school district personnel, youth sports associations, youth advisory councils, Executive Tourism Committee and colleagues in the field/profession via multiple forms of media;
  • Plans, organizes, and manages the activities of the Recreation Division by supervising and evaluating the programs in order to determine the success of each program as well as any changes necessary to improve the programs;
  • Prepares division budget and analyzes programs by reviewing program data and costs in order to propose, create and organize programs and capital improvements within the Recreation Division of the department;
  • Reviews the overall division operations to ensure compliance with the requirements for all departmental certifications by maintaining quality service levels, inspecting parks and recreation facility sites and attending professional development meetings and conferences on local, regional, state, national levels; and
  • Performs other assigned duties.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Parks and Recreation, Business, or related field;
  • Five (5) years of related work experience in recreation center operations with at least two (2) years of which should be in a supervisor role;
  • Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience; and
  • Valid Driver's License.

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret complex materials, budgets and related documents;
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with City administration, other employees, and the general public.


Hours of Work

The position of Recreation Superintendent is a full-time position, and shall be paid every two weeks at an agreed salary. This position is classified as an exempt employee status and will work a minimum of 40 hours per week. However, as a professional employee in the park and recreation field, it shall be assumed that hours beyond the minimum, including evenings and weekends, will be expected. Flex time may be used to avoid burnout.

Vacation
Non-civil service employees accrue 6.67 hours per month (2 weeks per year).
All police employees accrue 10 hours per month (3 weeks per year).
All Fire employees accrue 15 hours per month (7.5 - 24 hour shifts a year).

Sick Leave
Non-civil service employees accrue 10 hours per month (3 weeks per year).
All police employees accrue 10 hours per month (3 weeks per year).

Holidays
Non-civil service employees receive 13 paid holidays per year including one personal or "floating" day.

Longevity Pay
Earned at a rate of $4 per month.
This is calculated on number of years of service up to and including 25 years (maximum $1200).

Worker's compensation coverage is provided for all employees.

Fire/Police
Eligible for Education/Certification pay.

Deferred Compensation Plans- Mass Mutual/Empower
Payroll deduction for employee participation. City does not contribute.
