Position Rationale and Goal:

The Learning Strategist assists identified students with additional learning needs to reach their academic potential in collaboration with classroom teachers, administrators, educational support staff, parents and outside professionals. The Learning Strategist is responsible for the implementation and monitoring of student Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and facilitates the creation and implementation of a collaborative support plan for students who require differentiated learning.

Preferred Qualifications, Skills, and Personal Attributes:
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Strong organizational, communication, administrative and interpersonal skills, and
  • The ability to manage a group of educational assistants and/or resource teachers

Qualifications
  • Education and teaching experience in special education
  • BC teacher certification
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • History of successful work within the IB context is highly desirable
  • Experience teaching in a technology-rich environment


Key Duties and Responsibilities

1. Direct Student Support:
  • Work in classrooms with small groups and individual students using the principles of Universal Design for Learning
  • Use the strategies in the specialized learning plan to support and manage student learning
  • Empower students to feel responsible and take action
  • Advocate for the needs of individual learners and work collaboratively with the Learning Support Specialist to target areas for growth
  • Recognize a variety of levels of language competency and maintain awareness of the needs of emergent bilingual learners
  • Implement and prepare lesson plans to teach identified students (IEPs and/or internally identified as requiring support) who are significantly behind or ahead of grade-level expectations through a combination of push-in and pull-out lessons
  • Provide and monitor test and assessment data on individual students
  • Support and manage all students on specialized and individual learning plans in collaboration with Staff & Teachers, Parental & Community Involvement:

2. Program Development & Strategy:
  • Recommend, develop and implement programs, e.g., Response to Intervention, literacy, numeracy, etc., related to the role and the students with additional learning needs
  • Lead, implement, have timely reviews and, when appropriate, recommend Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) and Student Support Plans for students in the Senior School
  • Coordinate school-based team meetings with parents to discuss supporting assessments, outside referrals, and concerns about individual progress
  • Liaise directly with and support classroom teachers in meeting the diverse needs of students including their adoption of Universal Design for Learning practices
  • Assist classroom teachers to meet the individual needs of children in their classrooms by discussing strategies which will assist their students
  • Meet regularly with the Counsellor/Guidance Counsellor to support students, teachers, and parents
  • Collaborate with teachers, including attending grade-based planning meetings as required, in order to deploy the learning support team resources accordingly

3. Administrative & Logistical Tasks:
  • Represent the school at professional development as required
  • Contribute to the documentation of individual student learning progress
  • Maintain an inventory of resources specific to the role, e.g., software, hardware, furniture
  • Provide meaningful and timely communication to faculty, staff, and management
  • Assist in monitoring student attendance, behavior, and progress
  • Maintain resources and storage areas as directed
  • maintain accurate records and ensure students receive the required accommodations and support

4. Professional Appraisal and Development:
  • As instructed, engage in professional development in order to better understand the needs of students and the classroom instructional program
  • Actively participate in constructive professional growth and evaluation
  • Seek and act upon constructive feedback and advice

5. Involvement in the Wider School Community:
  • Take an active role within the school community by making a conscious effort to interact with all staff and be aware of current school events and initiatives
  • Positively support school initiatives organized by staff, students or parents through active participation and promotion within classrooms
  • Promote school unity through taking an active role in diversity, equity, and inclusion education
  • Attend school functions and special events, not limited to Meet the Teacher night, assemblies, or concerts
  • Attend and actively participate in scheduled meetings
  • Maintain an active presence in common areas and during scheduled supervision duties
  • Help guide the implementation of the strategic plan commitments


At times the Learning Strategist may be requested to take on additional duties as assigned by the Principal.
