JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Director of Facilities is directly responsible for maintaining the physical plants and grounds of all school property and assisting the Superintendent substantially and effectively in the task of providing long-range planning capability for construction and capital improvement projects. The Director also supervises all maintenance staff and is responsible for completing the performance evaluations of related supervisory staff.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Director of Facilities is directly responsible for maintaining the physical plants and grounds of all school property and assisting the Superintendent substantially and effectively in the task of providing long-range planning capability for construction and capital improvement projects. The Director also supervises all maintenance staff and is responsible for completing the performance evaluations of related supervisory staff.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Schedules work assignments for all maintenance and repairs on buildings and grounds
- Monitors the maintenance and repairs of all schools and school properties on a division-wide basis
- Makes recommendations on projects, including cost estimates and materials
- Monitors the progress of all construction sites
- Assists in the planning of new construction sites
- Submits regular reports to the Superintendent regarding the status of work completed, materials used, and labor expended
- Delivers presentations to the School Board, schools, local agencies, and groups regarding buildings and grounds of the school division
- Works directly with the Superintendent and Director of Finance in requisitioning materials and equipment and maintaining records of inventory
- Monitors expenditures of allocated funds
- Prepares departmental budget
- Prepares correspondence and reports to local agencies, governmental agencies, etc.
- Prepares status reports for all schools and school properties in the county
- Ensures that standards consistent with all applicable laws are maintained
- Directs the work of personnel assigned to the facilities and maintenance division in an overall system-wide maintenance program
- Supervises work crews for maintenance and repair of buildings and grounds
- Appraises the quality of housekeeping and directs custodial operations
- Assists in the recruitment and recommends assignment, training, transfer, promotion, demotion, or dismissal of all maintenance or custodial staff
- Evaluates related supervisory staff
- Monitors all contract administration for construction and maintenance projects
- Performs other duties as may be assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid Virginia driver's license
- Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering, construction, or a related field from an accredited college or university
- Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience in building maintenance, construction, or management
- Minimum of (10) years combined experience in building maintenance, construction, or division/school-based management, with at least five years' experience in administration and/or supervisory positions
- Experience in building construction, renovation, and maintenance of school and office buildings and grounds
- Ability to plan and supervise the operation of a large buildings and grounds program
- Contract writing and specification writing skills
- Knowledge of Federal Environmental Laws (e.g. OSHA, Clear Water Act, Radon Act, Asbestos Act)
- Strong professional and interpersonal skills and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with school personnel and members of the community
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Computer literate, proficient in Google Workspace
- Functional knowledge of commonly used office equipment and work-flow technologies
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to maintain an unquestionable degree of confidentiality
- Ability to multitask, work with interruptions, and work under pressure
- Ability to be dependable and punctual
- Ability to communicate effectively - use of expressive and receptive skills
- Ability to maintain composure during stressful situations
- Must possess physical and mental capability for the sole supervisory responsibility of public school students
- Functional knowledge of commonly used office equipment, software, hardware, and work-flow technologies
