General Statement of Duties
Provides instructional leadership of a special education public separate program, ensuring students with disabilities receive appropriate educational services by managing staff, coordinating Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), advocating for student needs, and ensuring compliance with special education regulations, all while maintaining a positive learning environment for students with diverse abilities.
Essential Duties
Serves as the instructional leader for a special education public separate program, grades prek-12.
Collaborates with the other principals and program leaders on the Campus of Virginia Randolph to ensure campus safety and effective management of building operations.
Actively participates in IEP meetings, monitor implementation of IEP goals, and ensure appropriate placement of students within the special education program.
Lead and supervise special education program coordinator, special education teachers, paraprofessionals, and related service providers, providing professional learning opportunities focused on best practices for students with disabilities.
Creates a positive school culture that promotes the ongoing improvement of learning and teaching for students and staff
Promotes and monitors student achievement and social-emotional needs using student data and other outcomes/indicators
Uses student performance data to assess teaching and learning effectiveness
Demonstrates knowledge of academic expectations and federal and state requirements for students with disabilities.
Uses individual student behavior plans for making informed decisions regarding student discipline
Foster strong relationships with parents, providing regular updates on student progress and addressing concerns related to their child's special needs.
Delegates duties and responsibilities and accepts responsibility for the decisions made and the actions taken
Demonstrates a clear understanding of and adherence to all School Board policies including the collection and expenditure of funds and budgeting
Demonstrates effective time management skills and is able to meet deadlines
Involves stakeholders in the development of the school quality process and makes necessary modifications, and assesses progress towards program goals
Aligns the school quality process to the School Division's Strategic Plan
Demonstrates clear and effective oral and written communication
Visible and accessible to the school community
Provides supervision for extended school year programs and other special activities as necessary
Serves as fiscal manager of all funds and financial auditing
Uses building management skills to maintain a safe, clean, and orderly environment for staff and students
Attends HCPS Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) meetings
Prepares reports and information to the Director of Exceptional Education.
Attends work consistently
Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Requires avalid teaching license and administration and supervision endorsement by the Virginia Department of Education or is eligible to be licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Requires at least three years experience as a school-based administrator or three years experience in a special education division leadership role. Must possess extensive knowledge of the curriculum and instructional program including content and methodologies for teaching students with disabilities. Previous administration experience including supervision of special education department is preferred. Special education teaching experience or a related field is preferred but not required. Experience and knowledge of behavior interventions and behavior strategies to address maladaptive behaviors in students with disabilities. Mandt certification preferred or completed within 3 months of hiring.
