The position of Associate Dean for Rural Medicine at the Sanford School of Medicine (SSOM) is a leadership role aimed at advancing the school's mission of supporting rural health care in South Dakota. The primary focus is to develop and expand rural medical education, foster relationships and programs that connect students, faculty and health care professionals to improve health care delivery to under-served communities.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and oversee all academic, research, and public service programs related to rural medicine sites.
  • Manage and direct the Frontier And Rural Medicine (FARM) program, including overseeing staff members.
  • Promote student professionalism and ethical behavior.
  • Contribute to the recruitment, mentoring, and professional development of teaching faculty, both academic and clinical.
  • Ensure that student needs and academic requirements are met, particularly in the context of rural health care settings.
  • Represent SSOM and the university to health care affiliates and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Participate in fund-raising efforts and external development activities to support rural health initiatives.
  • Manage the budget and allocation of resources for rural medical programs.


Qualifications must include:
An M.D. or D.O. degree;
Current board certification in a relevant specialty;
Ability to obtain a medical license to practice in South Dakota.
