Job Description

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) keeps New York City healthy, safe, and clean by collecting, recycling, and disposing of waste, cleaning City streets and vacant lots, and clearing snow and ice. DSNY is the nation's largest municipal sanitation agency, with nearly 10,000 employees, 59 district garages, and a fleet of more than 5,000 trucks, cars, and other types of equipment. The Department clears litter, snow, and ice from approximately 6,500 miles of City streets and removes debris from vacant lots as well as abandoned vehicles from City streets.

The Executive Director for Policy & Legislative Affairs will play a leadership role in managing DSNY's policy and legislative portfolio, which includes, but is not limited to waste containerization, collection and cleaning, solid waste management, diversion of recyclable materials, and sustainability.

The responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

-Support the Assistant Commissioner and executive teams in the development and strategic deployment of the agency's major public initiatives.

-Manage the agency's policy portfolio including developing new policies and programs to meet the agency's goals and objectives.

-Track City, State, and Federal legislation and policy proposals, serve as legislative liaison for all the agency bureaus, and provide reports, analysis, and recommendations to the Assistant Commissioner and executive staff.

-Manage the agency's legislative affairs, including preparation for hearings, negotiation of legislation, interfacing with other city agencies and elected officials, and leading proactive strategy for the agency's legislative priorities.

-Represent the Commissioner and the agency in public hearings, meetings, communications, and events with critical stakeholders.

-Work closely and collaboratively with the Assistant Commissioner and executive team to effectively promote the agency's priorities to critical stakeholders to achieve desired outcomes.

-Coordinate across the agency and with external agencies to implement and execute policy priorities.

Qualifications

1. Graduation from an accredited college with a Baccalaureate degree plus specialized training in public management and evaluation.
