Organization's Summary Statement:
The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) seeks an innovative, visionary, and student-centered leader to serve as the Dean of the School of Education, Social Sciences, and the Arts. The Dean will provide strategic leadership, academic vision, and operational oversight for six departments: Fine Arts, Education, Mathematics, English and Modern Languages, Criminal Justice, and Social Sciences. Reporting to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean will be responsible for advancing the school's mission, fostering academic excellence, enhancing faculty and student success, and strengthening external partnerships.

The successful candidate will be an experienced and collaborative academic leader with a strong record of scholarship, program development, faculty mentorship, and administrative effectiveness. This is an exciting opportunity to lead a dynamic school dedicated to interdisciplinary learning, community engagement, and preparing students for success in a rapidly changing world

Essential Responsibilities

1. Strategic Leadership & Vision: Develop and implement a vision for the school
that aligns with the university's strategic priorities and fosters innovation in
teaching, research, and community engagement.
2. Academic Excellence & Curriculum Development: Oversee academic
programs, ensuring rigor, relevance, and alignment with accreditation
standards while supporting program growth and interdisciplinary
collaboration.
3. Faculty & Staff Development: Recruit, mentor, and support faculty and staff in
their teaching, research, and service responsibilities, fostering an inclusive
and collegial academic environment.
4. Student Success & Enrollment Growth: Promote student engagement,
retention, and graduation by strengthening academic support services,
experiential learning opportunities, and career readiness initiatives.
5. Diversity, Equity & Inclusion: Champion initiatives that promote diversity,
equity, and inclusion in hiring, curriculum, and student support services.
6. Budget & Resource Management: Manage the school's budget, allocate
resources effectively, and advocate for funding to support faculty, research,
and programmatic needs.
7. External Partnerships & Community Engagement: Build relationships with
schools, government agencies, arts and cultural organizations, and other
partners to enhance opportunities for students and faculty.
8. Perform other duties as assigned by the Provost and Vice President for
Academic Affairs.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
1. A terminal degree in a discipline represented within the School of Education,
Social Sciences, and the Arts or a closely related field.
2. A distinguished record of teaching, research, and service sufficient to qualify
for tenure at the rank of professor.
3. At least three to five years of administrative experience in higher education,
preferably as a department chair, associate dean, or dean.
4. Demonstrated experience in budget management, strategic planning, and
program development.
5. A proven record of faculty mentorship and development.
6. A strong record of fostering interdisciplinary collaboration across
departments and schools.
7. Experience leading diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in an academic
setting.
8. Ability to recruit and retain high quality faculty and staff.
9. Experience with accreditation and assessment.

Physical Demands: May require extended periods of standing, bending, sitting at desk. May require lifting up to 25 lbs. Requires communication with a variety of constituents externally and internally. Requires operation of a variety of office equipment.

1. Strong leadership and decision-making abilities, with a collaborative and
transparent leadership style.
2. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage
effectively with faculty, staff, students, and external partners.
3. Strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to navigate
complex academic and institutional challenges.
4. Commitment to shared governance, faculty engagement, and student-
centered leadership.
5. Data-driven decision-making skills, with the ability to use institutional data for
continuous improvement.

Preferences:
1. Experience securing grants, external funding, or philanthropic support.
2. Demonstrated success in building partnerships with K-12 schools,
government agencies, or arts and cultural institutions.
3. Knowledge of the 1890 Land-Grant system.
