MBD is a dynamic global team which includes business development specialists, research analysts, brand, marketing and communications experts. By working collaboratively, our team shapes the firm's client strategy, completes analysis of complex business issues, targets opportunities, develops compelling proposals and creates content and marketing campaigns that lead our digital presence. Together, we define the client experience and shape the perception of Freshfields around the globe.
About MBD for the Antitrust, Competition and Trade (ACT) Practice
The ACT MBD team leads strategic positioning, visibility and client service activities for the world's preeminent antitrust and competition practice. With more than 300 lawyers in the UK, US, Europe and Asia, our lawyers are leaders in all aspects of this dynamic and rapidly evolving area of the law. They help companies navigate increased governmental intervention in consumer markets and challenging geopolitical and economic turmoil. This position is an excellent opportunity to work in an international business environment and with a team of lawyers and professional colleagues who have a strong culture of teamwork and collaboration. You will work on challenging, engaging work that will give you the opportunity to make your mark and progress your career. This role manages the day-to-day work flow across the platform along side two senior managers, one in Brussels and the other in London, in addition to specific initiatives in the United States.
Role summary/purpose of job
As described above, this is a multidimensional, global role (with a focus on the US) requiring sophisticated communication skills, and the ability to build strong relationships with internal and external partners. It also requires a deep understanding of antitrust and competition or other regulatory/litigation practices.
The Senior Business Development Manager will be responsible for providing both strategic and hands-on support to the US partners in connection with the pursuit of new business opportunities with the firm's top clients and key targets. They will develop a deep understanding of the firm's client base; identify opportunities to establish or broaden relationships; drive momentum through the sales cycle; and serve as a trusted advisor to the US partners on their go to market strategies. In addition to business development, the role will also guide/manage strategic marketing and visibility efforts including thought leadership, sponsorships and events, content creation, survey submissions and lateral attorney integration.

Key responsibilities and deliverables
Business Development
- Work closely with partners (both in and outside of the US) in creating clearly articulated strategies focused on developing new business with the ACT practice's top clients and priority targets;
- Lead and guide the execution of the strategies, and serve as a trusted advisor to the US partners in all stages of client engagement, including identifying approaches and topics for client discussion, as well as offering potential solutions and ideas;
- Working with the partners to identify client vulnerabilities and align those with market trends, and develop programs for client and prospect outreach;
- Actively manage next steps and share successful outreach across the US growth efforts, utilize automated tools like Salesforce to memorialize where each individual opportunity sits, and actively manage next steps in the process;
- Lead pitch prep meetings and discussions, and develop appropriate intelligence/materials in advance of those conversations using the firm's tools and research team; and
- Oversee and inform the creation of pitches, proposals, RFP responses and other custom collaterals. Bring original thought and creativity to working with partners to formulate high quality, original content.
Marketing, thought leadership and visibility
- Enhance the practice group's profile and key differentiators in sub-practice areas by developing messaging and market position, campaigns, ideas for programs and client communications that reach target audiences;
- Identify and oversee conference/ sponsorship opportunities that generate the most value and implement successful follow through;
- Design and execute new business initiatives for the practice and sub-practices including thought leadership, events, client seminars and / or training programs;
- Plan and communicate ROI on industry events, such as industry conference sponsorships, client presentations and seminars, client dinners, and other events related to the promotion of the practice and sub-practices;
- Support lateral partner integration in conjunction with the Global Head of BD for ACT and with counterparts across the Firm.
Key requirements (Communication/skills/experience)
- At least 12 years of experience in a professional service firm with solid business development/pursuit management experience;
- Experience working for a law firm or professional services firm with an area of law focus on Antitrust and Competition, Litigation or other Regulatory practices;
- Excellent written, presentation and oral communications skills;
- Exceptional analytical skills;
- Strong emotional intelligence and situational awareness;
- Strong multi-tasking and project management skills and demonstrated capabilities to manage multiple deadlines, changing project criteria, and maintaining calm under pressure;
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines and high expectations;
- An outstanding track record of generating creative and effective ideas and of working with/motivating/influencing others to implement them;
- Experience successfully working internationally - across offices and cultures;
- The ability to build strong working relationships with partners and other professionals in a complex, matrixed environment;
- Experience managing multiple stakeholders;
- Natural curiosity and dedication to learning; passion to grow into a well-rounded business development practitioner;
- A minimum of a Bachelors' Degree. An advanced degree is preferred.
