Position Description:

Our goal is to recruit, support, and retain a scholar in a 9-month tenure-track position with a primary focus on beef cattle nutrition, while also valuing experience in small ruminant nutrition that can be applied to beef systems. The ideal candidate will establish or expand a research program in one or more areas of ruminant nutrition that build upon departmental strengths. Among the areas of interest are, but not limited to, production management, feedlot nutrition, precision livestock nutrition, nutrient metabolism, and nutritional strategies for improving product quality. The successful candidate will be a leader in beef cattle nutrition education, including formal classroom instruction for students and extension to producers and other livestock industry stakeholders. Classroom teaching expectations includes contributing to existing courses within our curriculum and may include developing new courses. Of particular emphasis for this position is the teaching of the undergraduate course entitled "Principles of Animal Nutrition". Expertise in teaching nutrition courses would be favorable, and the successful candidate will be expected to train and mentor undergraduate and graduate students. The successful candidate will collaborate in cross-disciplinary teams and is expected to establish a nationally and internationally recognized extramurally funded research program. The new faculty member is also expected to work closely with extension educators, and partners in allied animal industries towards a common goal of fulfilling the university and college's missions. Faculty members have a shared responsibility to support and sustain the CFAES Principles of Community, convey good citizenship, and interact collegially. Performance Objectives:

Contribute to the Department's academic mission through the teaching of 9 credit hours per year, including Principles of Animal Nutrition. Demonstrate an ability to cultivate learning environments that are equitable and inclusive of students with diverse social identities and backgrounds, and commitment to enhancing diversity and inclusion within Animal Sciences and related professions. Develop and/or expand a collaborative research program in beef cattle nutrition including presenting research results at national and international meetings, seeking extramural funding, and producing impactful publications. Mentor graduate and undergraduate students in research and advise undergraduate students in academic planning. Develop an impactful extension program that addresses beef cattle production and nutrition. Work collaboratively with university faculty and staff and relevant Ohio industries to advance the land grant mission of the college and university. Serve the department, college, university, and professional communities through committee work and other appropriate responsibilities and activities.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Required: Earned Ph.D. in animal sciences, nutrition, or a related discipline.

Demonstrated expertise conducting applied and/or basic research in ruminant nutrition. Evidence of potential for excellence in teaching, research, and extension. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a willingness and ability to work closely with diverse groups of academic (e.g., students, staff, faculty) and industry audiences. Demonstrated interest in and/or experience with teaching, recruiting, mentoring, and advising diverse underserved students, including women, students of color, first generation, and non-traditional students.

Desired: Documented evidence of individual and/or collaborative research and teaching efforts in nutrition is desired. Demonstrated experience in extension and outreach, including effective communication with producers, stakeholders, and the broader livestock industry. Experience developing or working in interdisciplinary research teams. Expertise in applied beef cattle nutrition.

Department/School Information:

The Department of Animal Sciences is based on two campuses in Ohio: one in Columbus and the other in Wooster. There are 35 faculty and 85 staff that deliver the research, teaching, and extension programs of the department. Approximately 530 undergraduate students and 45 graduate students are enrolled. Undergraduate students can choose from seven Animal Sciences minors and three major degree specializations including Animal Biosciences, Animal Industries, and Veterinary Technology. The Department also collaborates in offering an interdisciplinary undergraduate Nutrition Program alongside Human Nutrition.

The Department offers a robust graduate program that awards MS and PhD degrees, including the OSU Interdisciplinary PhD in Nutrition (OSUN). The Department aims to increase the economic profitability of agricultural animals and the quality of their products through the departments priority areas that include: 1) Nutrition and the Microbiomes, 2) Growth and Development, 3) Health and Disease, and 4) Welfare and Human-Animal Interactions. The Department maintains herds and flocks of major food-producing animals across both campuses and statewide for teaching, research, and extension engagement.
