Summary Description:

Under the direction of the Office of School Support and Well Being (OSSWB), in collaboration with the Office of Special Education (OSE), the principal provides administrative oversight, orderly operation and supervision of a special education public separate day school designed to serve students with disabilities. Supports the need of the instructional program in providing services for the staff and students, .and provides instructional leadership to ensure a quality program in compliance with federal and state laws regarding the implementation of services for students with intellectual disabilities. Facilitates the teaching-learning process by providing appropriate educational opportunities for all students. Physical Demands: None Special Requirements: None

Knowledge Skills Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) regarding procedural processes that ensures the provision of a Free Appropriate Public Education for students with disabilities. Ability to develop and monitor the implementation of an Individualized Education Program (IEP). Demonstrates knowledge of the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program that includes the Alternate Learning Outcomes assessment process. Demonstrates knowledge of the integration of assistive technology and augmentative communication systems and devices across all settings to facilitate daily communication skills. Knowledge and experience working with speech-language pathologists, occupational/physical therapists, vision, and deaf and hard of hearing experts by ensuring integration of these related services into the daily instruction program. Ensures the implementation of effective transition services to prepare students adult day programs. Knowledge of the processes regarding the implementation of personal health plans and medical protocols by working collaboratively with school and private duty nurses. Excellent oral and written communication and human-relations skills.

Education Training Experience:

Master^s degree in special education from an accredited college or university with related coursework in administration, supervision, and special education; or Master^s degree in administration with a Bachelor^s degree in special education with teaching experience in the field of special education. Five years of experience teaching students with disabilities, preferably students with intellectual and physical disabilities who are medically fragile. Experience as an assistant principal or central office special education supervisor or instructional specialist is desirable. Other combinations of applicable education, training and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.Certificate License:Meets Maryland certification requirements for supervisor or Administrator II and special education or related field.
