The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) Is excited to announce an exciting new Associate Traffic Operations Review Engineer opportunity under the City's classification title of (Associate Civil Engineer). This position will be responsible for reviewing various transportation-related plans, such as Street Improvement Permits (SIP), Utility Major Permits, and internal Capital Projects ensuring they comply with relevant codes, standards, and City goals. In addition, the Associate Engineer will provide construction coordination support, assist in updating transportation asset information in systems like Infor, investigate traffic operations concerns, and evaluate potential solutions to improve overall safety and efficiency. The role also involves collaborating with both internal and external stakeholders, supporting the Senior Engineer in day-to-day project oversight, and contributing to the broader mission of delivering a safe and reliable transportation network for Seattle. Job Responsibilities

  • Review private development SIP plans, major utility permits, SDOT Capital Improvement Projects (CIPs), and other internal projects to ensure compliance with city, state, and federal transportation codes, standards, and best practices.
  • Support construction coordination efforts, working alongside city crews, contractors, and developers to ensure seamless integration of transportation elements in reviewed projects.
  • Provide technical feedback and recommendations to developers, consultants, and utility agencies regarding Seattle's engineering requirements, municipal code, and regulatory standards.
  • Conduct field visits and investigations to assess traffic operational concerns, document existing conditions, and contribute to the resolution of complex and routine transportation challenges.
  • Assist in problem-solving efforts by analyzing traffic data, identifying areas for improvement, and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to implement effective solutions.
  • Coordinate with the Senior Traffic Operations Review Engineer to track project progress, review work by junior staff, and contribute to overall team efficiency.
  • Participate in interdepartmental meetings and stakeholder discussions to facilitate communication between SDOT divisions, external agencies, and the public.
  • Support the department's diversity, equity, and inclusion goals by ensuring projects align with Seattle's Race and Social Justice Initiative.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology.

Experience: Three (3) years of professional experience in civil or traffic engineering.

OR: An equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the position duties.

Though not requirements, strong candidates will have some of the following experience or can describe comparable experience:

Desired Qualifications
  • Proven ability to read, interpret, and apply relevant ordinances, municipal codes, engineering standards, plans, and specifications related to improvements within the public right of way.
  • Three (3) years of experience in traffic engineering and operations.
  • Familiarity with channelization design, and key regulatory documents, including the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), Public Rights-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG), SDOT Director's Rules, and City of Seattle Standard Plans.
  • Strong negotiation, mediation, and conflict-resolution skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to present technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet strict deadlines, and adapt to evolving project needs while keeping supervisors informed of progress and challenges.
  • Highly detail-oriented with excellent organizational, time management, and customer service skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and experience using AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and GIS-based applications is a plus.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural workplace with a diverse customer base, ensuring equity in transportation decisions and project reviews.

Work Environment / Physical Demands:
  • Work is typically performed in a hybrid work environment in which a minimum of 3 days of the work is completed in a City office, and 2 days of the work is completed remotely in a regular 40-hour work week.
