Job Description

The Engineering Manager provides discipline leadership within a complete portfolio to meet needs for technology projects. The Engineering Manager counsels with other leaders to meet business needs. This is a people management position.

This individual works with divine guidance to provide or support technology that furthers the mission of the Church and reflects the eternal impact of the gospel.

Responsibilities

  • A primary responsibility includes the recruitment, development, training, and retention of engineers to ensure that engineering practices are aligned with leadership
  • Work with senior leadership to ensure quality solutions are developed according to enterprise standards and are delivered in a timely and high-quality manner
  • Utilize effective 1:1s, Accountability and Talent Improvement plans and other employee management tools to develop training plans and development plans for each engineer and ensure training activities align with established plans
  • Ensure engineers have the tools necessary to complete their work, apply best practices and that enterprise standards are understood and followed
  • Identify and recommend improvements in the areas of development methodology, deployments, testing, support, and team communication
  • Work closely with engineering leads to build leadership capability and to empower team leads to become strong engineering leaders within their assigned teams
  • Serve as a facilitator to connect teams with enterprise products and services that assist in delivery.
  • Help ensure areas of technical debt are identified, escalated for prioritization, and tracked through resolution
  • Collaborate with other engineering managers to facilitate cross-portfolio collaboration and reuse
  • Stay abreast of trends and directions in technology and development methodology, and can understand and apply their relevance to the organization and clearly communicates the risks and benefits
  • The employee must regularly manage the work of other employees (may include mixed workforce)
  • The employee is authorized, in partnership with HR, to hire or fire employees and recommends advancement, promotion or any other change of status of employees within their reporting line


Qualifications

Required:

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, or equivalent experience

Work Experience:
  • 8+ years of progressive technical experience.
    • 3+ years combined professional level leadership responsibility within a technology organization.

Demonstrated Skills & Abilities:
  • Experience building and maintaining productive working relationships at all levels including at an executive level.
  • Exceptional communication skills, including preparing succinct presentations for senior leadership.
  • Strong technology background. Skilled at establishing vision and can translate that vision into business solutions.
  • Demonstrated success building, deploying and operating enterprise-class solutions.
  • Strong IT product and operational experience, including budgeting, resource management and metrics. Must have demonstrated ability to manage a complex budget.
  • Must have significant technical proficiency to enable them to assess, coach and monitor team members on their technical disciplines
  • Must have technical proficiency to be the lead architect in their role
  • This job operates in a professional office environment
  • To successfully perform the essential functions of the job there may be physical requirements which need to be met such as sitting for long periods of time and using computer monitors/equipment


Preferred Qualifications:
  • MS or MBA
  • International experience
