Job Summary

This announcement will be used to fill a full-time Special Teacher-Multiple Disability position at the MN State Academy for the Blind.

This is a ten month per year position; the work schedule follows the school calendar and in addition, includes 2-3 weeks of summer school in July.

Under general supervision, contributes to the design and delivery of academic instructional programs to blind/visually impaired or deaf/blind students. Provides educational instruction and uses a variety of techniques to encourage appropriate behaviors. The primary function is to meet the educational requirements established IEP objectives of the students in attendance at MSAB.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • A valid Minnesota Teacher license from the Minnesota Department of Education OR the ability to obtain one prior to start date.
  • Knowledge of blind/visually impaired students and educational practices
  • Skill in writing basic reports, using arithmetic, and reading and interpreting charts and graphs
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Human relations skills sufficient to establish rapport with students, families and school districts
  • Ability to perform emergency procedures and personal safety techniques

Preferred Qualifications
  • Classroom experience working with blind/visually impaired students and families
  • Experience with multi-challenged/blind/visually impaired students and educational practices.
  • Knowledge of assistive technology.
  • Knowledge of Braille

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds (with assistance) and be able to sit, stand and walk throughout the workday
