BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the supervision of the Chief of Police or designee, the School Police Specialist performs various clerical duties and is responsible for managing all aspects of property and evidence handling and providing dispatch functions that communicate and monitor law enforcement activities within the School Police Department. This position plays a crucial role in maintaining the integrity and security of evidence related to investigations, ensuring compliance with legal procedures and departmental policies, and proper use of communication and records systems, primarily in law enforcement or other school safety services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Education: High school diploma or its equivalent. College level courses in criminal justice, law enforcement, or public safety are highly desired.
Experience required: Three (3) years of increasingly responsible and varied secretarial and clerical experience with public contact; working knowledge of computers, data input and word processing desired; two (2) years of experience maintaining budgets and expenditures. Experience in a school setting is preferred.
Years of experience can be supplemented by the following degrees:
?AA - 2 years of experience
?BA - 4 years of experience
?MA/MS - 6 years of experience

PERSONAL QUALITIES
Essential Duties
Assists and participates in the development and implementation of departmental policies and procedures as it relates to evidence and clerical work. Assists in the development of the department budget and maintains department budget expenses. Processes orders for supplies, equipment and other departmental needs according to established guidelines. Provides training in the proper use of the California Law Enforcement Telecommunications Systems (CLETS) and security measures related to its use. Serves as custodian of records and maintains police files including police reports,personnel, background, internal affairs investigations and other files as directed. Provide dispatch functions, dispatching district police and allied agencies operating radio systems to communicate with and monitor law enforcement activities. Maintain Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) records and record service call information. Department of Justice certification and compliance enabling access to use computerized systems such as National Crime Information Center (NCIC)and California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS). Maintains files relative to POST compliance and schedules appointments for polygraph exams and background investigations. Serves as liaison to the California Department of Justice and the Commission on POST for compliance auditing purposes. Communicates with administrators, personnel and outside organizations to coordinate activities, resolve issues and conflicts and exchange information. Schedules and attends a variety of meetings, training and seminars. Reviews and checks documents, records and forms for accuracy. Receives inquiries and complaints initiating corrective action or refers the matter to higher authorities. Performs a variety of duties related to the control/custody of evidence collected by department staff. Accesses NCIC database, when appropriate, for any information on evidence collected and responds to NCIC requests pertaining to evidence in custody. Maintains records of reports and related materials required for the filing of charges and warrant issuance and records data in evidence log and files officer reports. Ensures that documentation time deadlines are adhered to in juvenile and adult cases. Serves as liaison to outside agencies. Performs receptionist functions relative to persons entering the department facility and persons calling the department. Uses personal vehicle or District vehicle for travel to sites required. May require the use of a uniform. Performs related duties as assigned.
