This position operates within the Environmental Health Epidemiology Bureau (EHEB), Center for Health Protection (CHP), Public Health Division (PHD) in NMDOH.

Why does the job exist?

This position manages the APPLETREE program and oversees staff in the occupational health surveillance and childhood lead poisoning prevention programs. In addition, this position will develop protocols identifying public health needs at sites of concern and assure that these protocols adequately, appropriately, and usefully address the concerns at these sites. This position will work collaboratively with external partners to respond to specific public health issues related to harmful environmental exposures to hazardous substances. In addition, the incumbent will provide EHEB on-call services 1 to 2 days a month.

How does it get done?

The key responsibilities for this position include:

1. Hire, supervise and provide necessary training and guidance to section staff.
2. Develop protocols for identifying the public health needs at each site of concern and assure that it is developed in a way that makes it appropriate and useful in addressing the concerns at these sites while also following evidence-based principles of environmental health epidemiology.
3. Work collaboratively with communities, local, state, and federal agencies, and national organizations to respond to specific public health issues related to harmful environmental exposures to hazardous substances.
4. Develop work plans, evaluation plans, and write reports necessary to meet the requirements of the NM APPLETREE Program.
5. Environmental Health Epidemiology Bureau duties include providing EHEB on-call services 1 to 2 days a month.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Physical, Natural, or Environmental Science, Soil Science, or Engineering and five (5) years of work experience in public/environmental health, environmental science, Air Quality Management, Biology, Engineering, Chemistry, Geology, Hazardous Waste Management, Wildlife Management, and/or Water Resources. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling nine (9) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Education and years of experience must be related to the purpose of the position.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, stooping, bending, reaching and lifting up to twenty-five (25) pounds may be required. Some travel with the occasional overnight stay may be required.
