Why does the job exist?
Maintain an annual Continuing Education plan to ensure at least minimum C.E. requirements for facility CNA's and CMA's are provided and scheduled to accommodate all shifts. Participates in developing and providing the continuing education programs for licensed nursing staff and general staff education in order to meet the needs of the residents and maintain compliance with State and Federal regulations and credentialing bodies. Review and develop training programs as needed working with the Administrator and Nursing Department Administration; prepare lesson plans on accepted facility lesson plan format and provide to the Staff Development Trainer for file maintenance; prepare annual training plan by end of January each year, for minimum required C.E.'s; conduct at least one training needs analysis with the CNA'S to determine training needs/requests; conduct at least one training needs analysis with the CMA's to determine training needs/requests; review quarterly reports provided by supervisors of competency assessments of CNA'S for identification of trends and trending needs; provide specialized training or re-training of CNA's referred by Director of Nursing, Administration, Human Resources Supervisor, Human Resources Director, Office of Incident Management or due to survey recommendations; conduct at least monthly evaluations of patient care provided by CNA'S on all units and all shifts in order to determine training needs and will communicate observations to Department Supervisor in quarterly report and /or immediately to Department Supervisor, Director of Nursing and Administrator for any observations which may indicate possible Licensing and Certification deficiencies; ensure that CNA continuing education is tracked for compliance with facility policy and State and Federal regulations and report status to Department Supervisor and Director of Nursing monthly, CNA supervisors and CNA'S quarterly; ensure that CNA'S are provided with opportunities to make up missed C.E. in-services through monitored, take home/self-study packets; provide DOH Licensing and Certification Bureau with monthly report of all facility C.E.s awarded to NMVH CNA'S and maintain facility copy, available for inspection; participate in obtaining continuing education credits for licensed staff at least once a year, facilitate or conduct clinical aspects of general staff training as needed. Will perform 1 week, 1 month, 6 months and annual follow ups with all new staff to ensure skill set, growth plan and the comfort of the staff member. Maintain the policies and procedures as well as creating new ones for the department.
How does it get done?
1. Provide Training for NM State Veterans' Home Staff, Provide and conduct training and in-services, including New Employee Orientation, Annual Training, Basic Life Support / AED / First Aid, Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) in-services. Prepare specialized training courses for individual employees or a group of employees upon referral from supervisor or management. Prepare lesson plans and required documents for all courses taught. Conduct course evaluations at the end of each course presented. Periodically evaluate training effectiveness by preparing and distributing a formal course evaluation to supervisors and managers. Participate with other Staff Development staff to draft and prepare an annual training calendar. Assigning trainings and holding staff accountable for required/mandatory trainings in SNF CLINIC
2. Assist in Maintaining and Conducting a Documented Certified Nursing Aide Program. Maintain an annual continuing education (CE) plan to ensure at least minimum CE requirement for Facility CNAs are provided and scheduled to accommodate all shifts. Maintain record of attendance for CNA continuing education units and report to HR Director, Director of Nursing, Staff Development Coordinator and Lead Certified Nursing Aides within the first five (5) working days of the new calendar month. Maintain a documented Certified Nursing Aide training program in accordance with policy and NM Licensing and Certification standard of practice and Federal Register rules and regulations. Ensure that NM State Veterans Home CNA training program requires a minimum pass level of 80% on all written course work. Establish an evaluation approach / plan to assess skill level of Nursing Aides (NA) in training through return demonstration and provide additional training when necessary to correct deficient skills to 100%. Assure that cumulative Nursing Aide student pass rate for the Nurse Aide competency evaluation is at least a minimum of 90% annually. Assure that NM Nurse Aide Registry application form is completed for each NA candidate upon successful completion of competency evaluation program and is submitted to Prometric at least fourteen (14) business days before the scheduled test date. Prepare quarterly report for Department supervisor to include the number of NAs trained, number of successful completions of the evaluation program, cumulative annual pass rate of certification. Provide specialized training or re-training of CNAs referred by Director of Nursing, Administration, Office of Incident Management or based on survey recommendations. Ensure that CNA continuing education is tracked for compliance with Facility policy and State and Federal regulations, report status monthly to Department supervisor, Director of Nursing and Lead CNA supervisors. Issue / dispense Nursing Aide uniform scrubs, gait belt and keys and log sized and number of scrub tops and pants; have NA sign form for issue of uniforms and gait belt. Maintain inventory of returned scrub tops, including logging them on the laundry / linen request sheet, separating and preparing for sending to and receiving from laundry.
3. Maintain Current Certifications. Must maintain CPR Instructor Certification, current AHA / BLS / CPR certification and Defensive Driving Certification.

This job will also support the widows of the service men and women to include parents that have lost children in combat (Gold Star Parents)

Minimum Qualification
Must possess a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in New Mexico, or eligibility for such licensure in accordance with New Mexico requirements, or eligibility for a temporary license issued for employment at a specific institution in New Mexico and five (5) years of experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification.

Must possess and maintain a valid American Heart Association BLS / CPR Certification
