Overview:
The Senior Accountant will work closely with other members of the accounting and reporting teams within Talcott's U.S. Controller's Organization. The Controller Organization's Accounting team is responsible for the preparation and reporting of financial information for a variety of internal and external customers. This role is ideal for an accounting or finance professional interested in growing a fast-paced career at a growing life insurance / reinsurance carrier. This role offers the opportunity to gain a comprehensive understanding of the Company's operations, reinsurance arrangements, and corporate business functions, while interacting with key stakeholders across the enterprise. We are looking for individuals to bring a fresh perspective to our accounting and reporting processes and controls. This role will require strong analytical capabilities, attention to detail, and a focus on maintaining strong but efficient and controlled financial reporting processes with a goal of identifying process improvements in assigned areas, while maintaining integrity and accuracy.

Responsibilities:
- Assume an active role in the US GAAP and US Statutory financial close and reporting process for Talcott with quarterly and annual deliverables, including preparation of journal entries, reconciliations, and supplemental statutory reporting schedules
- Support the Company's external financial reporting for both US GAAP and US Statutory accounting bases
- Support the preparation and compilation of earnings analysis and documentation of drivers of key financial metrics across the US business
- Support ad-hoc financial reporting/analysis and other strategic projects, including new accounting implementation and new deal/business integration
- Partner with cross-functional teams (e.g., actuarial, investment accounting, reinsurance teams) to research and explain results, particularly for life and annuity blocks that are ceded or assumed through reinsurance
- Perform required internal controls, while challenging and enhancing relevant controls across the team to be in compliance with SOX
- Streamline processes and procedures to continually improve efficiency and controls
- Develops technical understanding of insurance business from a unique vantage point
- Creates visibility to senior finance management through work assignments
- Offers broad business and/or product exposure
- Tests the ability to communicate, present ideas, and influence others
- Challenges analytical skills through critical thinking, problem solving, and solution finding
Qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree in accounting required, CPA or MBA a plus
- Minimum of 4 years of experience working in the financial services industry and understand the complexities of financial statements
- Experience in life and annuity insurance/reinsurance
- Strong understanding of reinsurance accounting, including ceded and assumed treaty structures, reinsurance recoverables, and financial impacts of retrocession arrangements (e.g. risk transfer, reserve credit)
- Demonstrated experience with statutory filings (e.g., NAIC Annual and Quarterly Statements), including detailed schedules
- Ability to consolidate, manipulate, and analyze large sets of financial data utilizing Microsoft Excel and Oracle reporting tools
- Ability to proactively identify, define, and resolve complex problems, and escalate as necessary
- Strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills with proven attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities with guidance in a fast-paced environment
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
- Demonstrated leadership capabilities through teamwork, initiative, integrity, and customer service mindset
- Must be self-directed, highly motivated and able to collaborate and thrive in a dynamic entrepreneurial environment
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, PeopleSoft/Oracle/Smartview or other general ledger applications
- Experience with WDesk and/or statutory reporting software (e.g. WINGS)
- Flexible and adaptable to constantly changing team and individual roles and responsibilities as the business continues to grow and change
