The City of South Pasadena Fire Department is seeking highly motivated entry-level and lateral candidates that demonstrate exceptional customer service and exhibit a passion for public service to apply for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic.
Lateral candidates must be currently employed full-time by a paid, professional fire department or district. 12 months of firefighter/paramedic experience is desirable for lateral candidates.

Duties & Responsibilities

Under general supervision, Firefighter/Paramedics are part of a fire suppression/rescue team that responds to emergency medical incidents, structure fires, wildland fires, vehicle accidents, hazardous materials, spills/releases, and additional types of routine and non-emergency calls for service.

Examples of Duties
Duties include, but are not limited to, fire prevention, completion of written reports and memoranda, public education, emergency/disaster preparedness, and station and apparatus maintenance. Firefighter/Paramedics are required to participate in emergency medical services continuing education, firefighting proficiency training, and in-house educational programs. Firefighter/Paramedics may be directed to perform additional duties as required.
Qualifications

Employment Standards

Education/Experience:
Candidates shall be at least 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or equivalent. All candidates must have (1) certificate of completion of California State Fire Marshal's Office accredited fire academy, or California State Fire Marshal Firefighter I certification; (2) proof of passing the Los Angeles Area/Orange County Fire Chiefs Firefighters Physical Ability Test (Biddle) or IAFF CPAT within the last 12 months and (3) a valid California EMT-P License.

The Ideal lateral candidate would have at least 12 months of firefighter/paramedic experience. A Firefighter "F" Endorsement as issued by the State of California Department of Motor Vehicles is highly desirable.

Knowledge of:
Arithmetic, principles of mechanics, elementary chemistry; modern fire fighting techniques and problems; basic English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and composition.

Medical supplies, pharmaceuticals, and common prescription drugs; diagnostic signs and treatments for injuries, appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

Ability to:
Maintain and operate a transport ambulance and the equipment related to its use. Perform emergency first aid, including C.P.R.; respond quickly to changing situations under emergency pressure; climb ladders and work at considerable heights; use tools and equipment; perform limited mechanical work involved in maintaining firefighting and rescue vehicles; appropriate safety precautions and procedures; and understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Working Conditions
All Fire Department personnel work under extreme conditions that require excellent physical conditioning. Requires exposure to extreme heat, flammable liquids, hazardous gases, smoke, explosions, chemicals, electrical hazards, faulty structures, inclement weather and communicable diseases.

Physical Demands:
Exposure to extreme physical demands would require the candidate to be in excellent condition. This position requires heavy lifting and/or dragging of heavy weight, carrying, climbing, pushing, pulling, stooping, bending, stretching, squatting, balancing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, running, jumping, twisting and other forms of moderate to extreme physical exertion.

Special Requirements
A valid California Class "C" Drivers License by the time of appointment. After candidate is appointed, conditions of continued employment include: Los Angeles County EMT-P accreditation required within three months of hire date and continued accreditation to practice as an EMT-P in Los Angeles County.

FLSA Status
All Fire Department personnel who work 24-hour shifts fall under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
