About the Work Unit
The Pavement Design unit at the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) works to increase the quality of pavements on Colorado's interstate and highway system. This unit reviews proposed pavement designs for structural and economic adequacy and maintains specifications for quality control and quality assurance of materials incorporated into highway construction projects.
About the Position
CDOT has a vacancy for Engineer-in-Training IIIs in our Pavement Design unit. This position will provide engineering knowledge and technical support for the statewide use and implementation of the AASHTO Pavement Mechanistic-Empirical Design (PMED) software.

About the Position
CDOT has a vacancy for Engineer-in-Training IIIs in our Pavement Design unit. This position will provide engineering knowledge and technical support for the statewide use and implementation of the AASHTO Pavement Mechanistic-Empirical Design (PMED) software.
Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Analyze project pavement design data and confirm or make recommendations on the structural adequacy and economic feasibility of the proposed pavement structures. Recommend materials project special provisions and test procedures.
- Assemble observations and data to evaluate pavement alternatives that meet AASHTO PMED software parameters.
- Conduct pavement designs in accordance with CDOT policies, perform Life Cycle Cost Analyses (LCCA) for projects with a budget over $3 million, analyze materials-related issues and improvements, and act as a liaison between stakeholders on materials-related topics.
- Make revisions and upgrades to the training course in pavement design and the LCCA.
- Update specifications in the publication of CDOT's Pavement Design Manual, Field Materials Manual, and Laboratory Manual.
- Assist in the development and maintenance of the specifications for quality control and quality assurance of materials incorporated into highway construction projects.
- Assist with the loss of support and load transfer efficiency calculations associated with the AASHTO Back Calculation Tool (BcT) and Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD).
- Implement new pavement design standards, life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) procedures, and specifications, including alternate bids.
- Assist with developing a methodology for quantifying Global Warming Potential (GWP) to reduce this impact on eligible projects and materials.
- Review the annual Quality System Manual (QSM) from the epoxy steel coater manufacturers and concrete pre-cast manufacturers for compliance with CDOT requirements.
- Evaluate nationally calibrated models in the AASHTO PMED program for the design of Portland Cement Concrete Pavement (PCCP). Determine what local calibration factors should be utilized to reduce excessive costs or premature failure due to over or under design of PCCP.
- Other job duties as assigned.
Work Environment:
- Your schedule will primarily be 8:00 am - 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday, with the opportunity for a flexible schedule
- Opportunity to work from home 1-3 days a week after training is completed
