Key Essential Functions and Accountabilities of the Job
- Responsible for the day-to-day workflow of the inpatient pharmacy, providing a comprehensive array of pharmacy services to patients of all ages in the Emergency Room, Inpatient, ICU, OB/Nursery, and Surgical departments.
- Responsible for recruiting, hiring, and training new pharmacy technicians focusing on acute services.
- Prepare and distribute medications according to Federal and State law, provide patient counseling and education, and advise the medical, nursing, and village staff on drug therapy.
- Perform professionally, respecting confidentiality, and demonstrating qualities endorsed by the seven Standards for Service Excellence outlined in the SEARHC Human Resources Manual.
- Responsible for maintaining and updating clinical policies and procedures related to the inpatient pharmacies within the organization.
- Engages new pharmacists and technicians and trains them in inpatient processes.
- Assesses staff competency and ensures that staff competency and production documents are up-to-date.
- Engages in pharmacy hiring processes to ensure quality candidates are selected for open positions.
- Works with the Clinical Manager and Lead Outpatient Pharmacist to provide critical feedback/education for pharmacists and technicians as needed.
- Ensures collaboration and consistency of inpatient services across the consortium.
Other Functions
- Actively participates in the organization-wide Pharmacy & Therapeutics committee.
- Serves as Pharmacy Student Program Coordinator for the facility.
- Serves as Pharmacy Lead for the organization's antimicrobial stewardship program.
- Assists pharmacy managers with Quality Assurance and Process Improvement (QAPI) monitoring and reporting requirements.
- Provides coverage of pharmacy services in other pharmacy settings as required by current staffing (e.g., outpatient, infusion, village clinics).
- Other duties as assigned.

Additional Details:
Education, Certifications, and Licenses Required
- PharmD or Bachelor of Pharmacy degree
- Valid pharmacist license in any state
- Valid pharmacist license in the State of Alaska (Not required at hire)
- BLS and ACLS certification (within 1 year of hire)
- Completion of ASHP pharmacy residency program preferred.
- Clinical Competency required within 3 months of hire
- High Risk Competency required within 3 months of hire
Experience Required
- Minimum of 3 years of hospital pharmacy experience OR completion of a PGY1 Residency + 1 year of hospital pharmacy experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must be proficient at reviewing the patient's medical history, labs, and medication orders using an in-depth knowledge of the pharmaceutical sciences.
- Must possess knowledge of state and federal laws governing pharmacy practice.
- Must be able to provide care appropriate to the needs of patients of all ages.
- Adept in oral and written communication with patients and staff.
- Must have a working knowledge of computer application skills.
- Possess math skills required to accurately calculate drug dosages, both oral and intravenous, of compounded formulations.
- Possess the ability to work cooperatively within the health system and pharmacy staff and exercise sound professional judgment.
- Possess the ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to workload and work schedule changes.
- Possess the ability to work independently, set priorities, make critical decisions, and respond quickly to emergency requests.
- Drug names and strengths, generic equivalents, pharmaceutical and medical terminology, and pharmacy law
- Has comprehensive knowledge of USP 797 and 800 standards and demonstrates subject matter expertise on existing policies and procedures related to these standards and products beyond-use dating.
- Knowledge of computer systems as well as knowledge of operation and capabilities of all automated equipment within the pharmacy as well as those in satellite areas
- Mentor, train, and assist pharmacists and technicians
- Communicate with patients verbally in person and on the phone
- Multitask with constant interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule
- Work cooperatively with all health system and pharmacy staff and deal with difficult people
- Set priorities, solve problems, and respond quickly in emergencies
