Spokane Public Schools is accepting applications for Director of Secondary Curriculum & Instruction. This position is responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum, instructional programs, and professional development initiatives for grades 6-12. This position ensures that the district's instructional practices align with state and national standards, fosters continuous academic improvement, and supports teachers and administrators in delivering high-quality education to all students. This position reports to the Executive Director of Academic Services, while working closely with the Assessment and Student Success departments.
Responsibilities
Ensure cohesive expansion of College in the High School (CiHS) offerings by partnering with local universities to facilitate course and teacher approvals. Create an articulation of course offerings in alignment with the Washington 45. Ensure Advanced Placement (AP) course offerings continue to meet student interest and need and provide oversight of the district's AP exam ordering and administration. Coordinate required professional development opportunities for CiHS, Bridge to College, and AP teachers, among others. Provide guidance and leadership to secondary content coordinators and oversee their day-to-day work to support them in meeting department goals and district priorities. Lead work to standardize secondary grading practices and coordinate with the PowerSchool Support Team on gradebook technical calibration for teacher support. Monitor timelines of curriculum adoptions to create multi-year strategic plans for adoption cycles; partner with content coordinators to lead large-scale curriculum adoptions (i.e. Secondary ELA) and the implementation of new learning standards. Facilitate the Council for Curriculum and Assessment, as described in policy and procedure 2020. Serve as lead for secondary AVID programming. Co-facilitate the Assistant Principals of Curriculum meetings and attend HS Principals Meeting (as needed) to provide support to buildings in teaching and learning. Coordinate and collaborate with secondary content coordinators in the process of district-wide assessment development and refinement, including co-planning and facilitating teacher worktime focused on developing course/program guides with learning intentions and success criteria, scope and sequences, common formative assessments, and common scoring rubrics; facilitate post-assessment debrief meetings (in collaboration with content coordinators) to review results of assessments to inform instruction and to refine assessments. Create district-level data analysis of assessments to share with building administrators, district leadership, and the school board. Provide leadership for Professional Learning Communities. Support in the continued development and expansion of student success courses (i.e. Life Readiness) for all high school students. Engage with the Washington State Board of Education's Mastery-Based Learning Collaborative alongside WSSDA Model Policies to support school board and district leadership's vision to expand Mastery-Based Learning initiatives; Work to establish building-level protocols and processes to meet state requirements of mastery-based learning options, in addition to creating a plan to create universal mastery-based learning experiences for all students. Coordinate with the K-12 Counseling Student Services Coordinator to support high school graduation requirements coherence. Support college and career readiness efforts, alongside high school administrators, by attending college and career facilitator collaborations and identifying success plans for Key Performance Indicators like Post-Secondary Readiness. Work alongside the Director of Fiscal and Operational Data to support secondary schools in creating building schedules that provide equitable course taking pathways for students; support building administrative teams to effectively balance their course loads, and staff FTE. Provide guidance to stakeholders related to student registration, course offerings, and course load balancing. Support middle and high school registration logistical preparation, ensuring that annual changes encompass school board priority objectives and goals with a focus on communication to students and families to build coherence. Maintain appropriate budget oversight of funding, including Title I, Title II, and LAP. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Valid Washington State principal or program administrator credential required. Minimum of 10 years' successful education experience; at least 5 years administrative experience preferred. Master's degree in educational administration or related field required. Demonstrated experience in development and administration of budgets and staffing allocations. Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of the applicable laws, regulations, and emerging practices pertaining to assigned responsibility to include knowledge of current issues and trends in assessment, curriculum, and instruction. Demonstrated ability to connect progress monitoring techniques (walkthroughs, assessment results, classroom observations, rounds) to the design, implementation and evaluation of the School Improvement Process. Demonstrated ability to provide positive, effective, and culturally competent leadership with others and to develop and accomplish personal and organizational goals. Demonstrated ability to effectively represent the district and interact successfully with agencies, diverse groups, community groups, and public. Successful and demonstrated experience and skills in current technology being used in today's educational administration environment, to include a personal ability to use computer technologies for assessment, planning, budgeting, professional development, scheduling, and other management activities. Demonstrated ability to effectively plan, schedule, and use resources; reach logical conclusions and make high quality decisions involving others appropriately in the decision-making processes; and act and accept responsibility for actions and consequences. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form, using language that is appropriate for the person or group. Demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships and interact successfully with school district administrative, instructional support services staff, and labor representatives, including perceiving the needs and concerns of others; assisting others in resolving conflicts; motivating others; and design programs to assist others in meeting organizational goals.
