Job Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Police, Police Officers are responsible for providing professional, ethical, and impartial law enforcement services to the Grafton community. Officers respond to calls for service from the public and work to identify potential problems, taking appropriate action to address them. Additionally, they are required to effectively and efficiently handle any administrative tasks assigned by the Chief of Police
Lateral transfer applicants will be eligible to complete an accelerated field training program.

All applicants, including lateral eligible applicants, shall complete each step of the examination process to be considered for employment. The examination and hiring process will consist of the following as outlined in Section 4.03 of the Grafton Police and Fire Commission Rules of Procedure:
1. Applicants will be provided a web link to the police department's background investigation platform, Guardian Alliance, where the applicant will establish an account, complete a personal history questionnaire, and upload any required/requested supplemental information, including the signed and notarized Authorization to Release Information waiver.
2. Any misrepresentation or intentional omission concerning any material fact contained in the application or personal history questionnaire shall be sufficient reason for excluding the applicant from further consideration.
3. If the initial review of the application and personal history questionnaire reveals information that disqualifies the applicant, the application will be rejected, and the applicant may not progress any further in the selection process.
4. Applicants selected to continue in the process will be provided a series of questions, to which they must provide written responses. These essay responses will be timed and occur on the same day and immediately before the oral interview. The written responses will be factored into the overall scores assigned by the interview panel.
5. Members of the Grafton Police Department, under LES 2.01(1) (h), will administer an oral interview to qualifying applicants. The Chief of Police will select the interview panel consisting of one police supervisor, a field training officer (FTO), a non-ranking officer/staff member, and a representative from Human Resources. Failure to complete the interview on the date and time assigned will eliminate the applicant from further participation in the selection process.
6. The Commission will administer an oral interview from acceptable advanced candidates. If a candidate cannot appear on an assigned date and time and gives prior notification to the Commission, the Commission may designate an alternative date and time. Candidates failing to appear for the oral interview on the assigned date and time will be eliminated from the selection process. After all candidates have been interviewed, the Commission will certify acceptable candidates and place their names on an eligibility list that will be forwarded to the Chief of Police. The eligibility list shall expire one year from the approval date; however, the Commission reserves the right to suspend or extend the eligibility list at any time. The Chief of Police, at their discretion, may or may not draw from the eligibility list to fill vacancies.
7. The applicant will then participate in a one-on-one interview with the Chief of Police. The Chief may offer employment contingent upon completing the tests identified in subsection (h).
8. The candidate will undergo a psychological assessment, under LES 2.01(1)(g); a medical examination under LES 2.01(1)(g) 1& 2; a drug test, pursuant to LES 2.02, a polygraph examination and an in-depth background investigation, in accordance with LES 2.01(f).
This is an open/active process to fill a current vacancy and to establish an eligibility list for future hiring. Strong preference will be given to WI LESB-certified/certifiable candidates. As of January 1, 2024, the annual starting salary for PO 1 is $70,449.05. Lateral consideration will be given to those who are currently serving as police officers and who have more than two years of experience. Applicants with 2 - 4.99 years of experience may be eligible to start at PO 2 ($77,023.33). Applicants with five or more years of experience may be eligible to begin at PO 3 ($81,721.00).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
This position operates under the general supervision of a Police Sergeant and may report directly to the Assistant Chief of Police or the Chief of Police. When needed, a Police Officer may also report to another Police Officer who serves as the shift supervisor (Officer in Charge) in the absence of a Police Sergeant.
The individual may have direct authority over officers during their shift if designated as a shift supervisor (Officer in Charge) or assigned to lead a special task by the Chief of Police, Assistant Chief of Police, or a Sergeant. They also possess indirect authority over police volunteers, interns, or civilian personnel regarding matters that impact the safety of the officers.

1. Complies with all Village policies and procedures, including those defined in the Village of Grafton Employee Handbook
2. Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in Village and department attendance policies and procedures.
3. Provides a variety of law enforcement services including patrolling streets and other public places on an assigned shift.
4. Performs activities associated with investigations and crime prevention; writes detailed police reports; collects physical evidence. Assists with filing cases; testifies in court.
5. Provides information, assistance or directions to the public; emphasizes community policing through public meetings and speaking directly with citizens; performs a variety of public relations and public education duties.
6. Intervenes in disputes, apprehends suspects, makes arrests, issues citations, identifies witnesses, conducts preliminary investigations, and re-establishes law and order at the scene. Interviews and/or counsels involved parties such as witnesses, suspects, students, and parents. Prepares documentation of activities performed and information gathered. Follows up on cases. Protects and preserves crime scenes.
7. Respond to calls for assistance, including assaults, fights, domestic disturbances, thefts, traffic accidents and traffic control, and other criminal or civil complaints; transport prisoners to detention facilities as necessary.
8. Interacts with other jurisdictions, law enforcement agencies, and courts of law.
9. Researches and completes special projects like policy and village ordinance development.
10. Works a varying schedule and/or shift.
11. May photograph and/or sketch crime scenes and accidents.
12. May be assigned to serve in the public schools as a School Resource Officer, as a member of the Special Response Team (SRT), motorcycle officer, K-9 officer, and/or Crisis Negotiation Team. May serve as a field training officer, acting field supervisor, police training instructor, department recruiter, or peer support team member.
13. May be required to work overtime.
14. Performs work requiring specified respiratory equipment that guards against exposure to airborne hazards.
15. Performs other duties as assigned.
MARGINAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESMaintains departmental equipment, supplies, and facilities.
Maintains contact with the general public, court officials, and other village officials when performing police operations.

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEntry Level
1. Be a United States citizen;
2. Be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment;
3. Be of good moral character;
4. Be able to read and write the English language understandably;
5. Possess a Wisconsin high school diploma or a diploma issued by an out-of-state high school accredited by an appropriate agency of the state or shall have passed the general education development (GED) diploma test or any other test recommended by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction as indicating high school diploma level;
6. Must have completed at least 60 college credits from an accredited college or university, hold an Associate Degree from an accredited institution, or demonstrate the ability to complete one of these requirements within five (5) years from the hire date.
7. Have not been convicted of any federal felony or of any offense that, if committed in Wisconsin, could be punished as a felony unless the applicant has been granted an absolute and unconditional pardon;
8. Have no Domestic Abuse-related convictions.
