The Energy Systems Modeling lead will refine and synthesize Tesla's vision for the future electricity grid, through quantitative and statistical energy systems modeling. working across Tesla's energy teams to create a vision for the future of the grid, supported by a solid foundation of systems modeling and research. This role will provide strategic direction and technical modeling expertise to product, business development, and engineering teams. Additionally, this role will work with external stakeholders to ensure Tesla's research and development aligns with the future evolution of the energy industry.

Responsibilities
- Technical modeling leadership - lead a modeling team by selecting appropriate models for specific questions, optimizing internal and external resources for internal model development and maintenance (software, infrastructure, consultants, etc.)
- Product Enablement - ensure that product and engineering roadmaps align with Tesla's vision for the energy infrastructure; help answer complex questions as they arise
- Vision and Strategy - work across Tesla's energy teams to further develop a comprehensive vision for the energy system of the future, considering renewable integration, grid reliability, sectors beyond power (e.g. hydrogen, large loads, etc.), market dynamics, and decentralized systems
- Thought leadership and policy - synthesize results of studies and share them with the outside world. Convince the industry and regulators that Tesla's vision is possible and help craft policies to achieve it
Requirements
- 15+ years of experience in the energy sector, preferably in grid strategy/consulting, academic research, and/or product development
- Deep understanding of energy systems (power, transportation, buildings, fuels, industry, etc.), market design, and grid optimization technologies; ideally candidates will also have experience in utility planning (ISP, IRP, distribution system planning, etc.) under high decarbonization scenarios
- Knowledge of emerging technologies: nuclear, geothermal, carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS), hydrogen, long-duration energy storage, and distributed energy resources
- Extensive experience with common energy system modeling tools, both commercial and open-source (PyPSA, NEMS, Plexos, Promod, GE Maps, etc.)
- Experience with modern data management and software development methodologies
- Strong technical background and ability to answer detailed engineering questions
- Proven track record of driving product strategy and influencing technical roadmaps
- Exceptional communication skills to engage with technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Experience leading teams of modelers, developers, and/or researchers in pursuit of a broader study goal, preferred
- Strong network within the energy, policy, and technology sectors, preferred

$112,000 - $246,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits
Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
