A Director of Project Accounting typically holds a senior-level position that oversees all financial aspects of project accounting within an organization. The role is key for managing project budgets, financial forecasts, and ensuring accurate reporting of project financials.
Key Skills:
Project Accounting Expertise: Deep understanding of how project accounting works, including time tracking, cost management, billing, and invoicing.
Financial Reporting: Ability to prepare financial statements and reports specific to projects, with knowledge of project-based financial analysis.
Budgeting & Forecasting: Experience in creating and managing budgets for multiple projects simultaneously.
Risk Management: Understanding project risks and financial risks, and the ability to mitigate them.
ERP Systems Proficiency: Knowledge of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software and multiple accounting systems (Microsoft Dynamics, Deltek vision, Deltek FMS, Deltek Advantage, BQE to name a few)
Leadership & Team Management: Ability to lead and mentor a team, manage workloads, and foster a positive working environment.
Communication & Collaboration: Strong communication skills for interacting with various departments like project management, finance, and senior leadership.

What you'll do
- Oversee all project accounting activities, ensuring compliance with financial policies and regulations.
- Train and support the Project Accountants on an as needed basis
- Implement project accounting standards across multiple acquired companies
- Review Unbilled and WIP on a project-by-project basis
- Hold project review meetings with operations
- Prepare and calculate monthly revenues by project
- Develop policies and procedures for the department
- Provide margin erosions or enhancements details for discussions and decision making
- Closely work with the operational leads reviewing their monthly numbers and provide projections and advice on how to proceed to meet budget expectations
- Help compile yearly budget files and quarterly forecast files
- Analyze budget/forecast vs actuals results on a monthly and year-to-date basis
- Track AR and Unbilled DSO and provide feedback and status on how to resolve and reduce DSO
- Maintain Account Receivable tracking sheet for each firm to discuss during monthly AR calls (separated from Project review to allow for a more focused approach)
- Supervise the billing cycle and maintain standardization and control across all firms
- Assist in yearly company audits
- Support miscellaneous audit and client requirements
- Provide multiple financial reports to management including but not limited to: monthly P&L month end closing reports, Actual vs Budget/Forecast Analysis, Write-off Analysis Report, DSO comparisons, and Weekly Labor Analysis tracking.
- Effectively communicate with project managers regarding contract documents, contract modifications, approvals and any additional services related to billing
- Work directly with clients to provide high customer service levels, address client needs and provide solutions.
- Coordinate collection efforts and resolve aged WIP.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting or Business with strong Accounting experience preferred.
- 10+ years of accounting experience-preferably in engineering or a project based industry
- Experience with Microsoft Dynamics or Deltek or other comparable ERP solution including analytical tools (BI).
- 8+ years of experience with creating complex financial reports
- Demonstrated ability to manage projects from concept to implementation
- Demonstrated ability to monitor and evaluate business financial results, key performance indicators (KPIs), and objectives and key results (OKRs)
