Description:

  • Performs all duties as outlined in the Emergency Medical Technician and Lieutenant job description.

  • Supervise an operational area or unit within the department, which may include one or more direct reports. Serve as a subject matter expert within assigned area.
  • Dissemination and implementation of directives from command staff to personnel.
  • Provide direct supervision and support to Lieutenants. Develop, implement, manage and ensure proper integration of activities with EMS' overall operations and mission. Review and discuss operational needs in assigned area and / or shift.
  • Within assigned area duties may include project management, record keeping, procurement, report writing, technical services and systems, planning, investigative processes involving patient complaints or personnel matters, and system administration.
  • Review records and reports of activities performed by personnel; prepare reports and presentations summarizing activities within assigned area and/or shift.
  • Review practices and procedures to assess their effectiveness and recommend improvements.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with the general public, community groups and related agencies to enhance the performance of Boston EMS.
  • Review time off and schedule related requests; adjust work assignment as necessary.
  • Devise and implement emergency / disaster recovery plans for equipment and systems; manage contract billing, purchase order, and vendor relations.
  • Develop and execute remediation strategies for clinical review.
  • Lead the development and delivery of training and professional development opportunities in accordance with OEMS and department protocols and priorities.
  • If assigned to the training division, must secure (at the earliest convenience of the department) and maintain Instructor Coordinator and BLS CPR Instructor certifications. Training assignment duties may include EMT course management and delivery; in-service/BLS refresher training curriculum development and delivery; and recruit academy oversite and instruction.
  • Schedule, coordinate, staff and support community educational programs and initiatives.
  • Operationalize and support Boston EMS' mobile integrated healthcare (MIH) and MIH emergency department avoidance advancements in patient care and care coordination, including but not limited to having enhanced awareness of all new protocols and policies, providing guidance and mentoring to personnel, supporting quality assurance, offering feedback, and informing program improvement efforts.
  • Working to help BPHC advance as an antiracist organization by meeting or exceeding the standards set by the BPHC Anti-Racism Policy.
  • Promote health equity, inclusion and diversity within the department and community.
  • Perform other duties as required.


  • Current certification as an Emergency Medical Technician with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health;
  • Possession of a valid Class D Driver's License;
  • Applicants must have at least five (5) years of service at Boston EMS, of which one (1) of those years must have been in a supervisory capacity. Supervisory capacity to be defined as full time work as a clinical or operational supervisor or combined (2,080) hours as a field training officer or lead field training officer.
  • Ability to work with a minimum amount of supervision while managing multiple projects and or priorities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with laws and regulations applicable to Boston EMS is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Boston, its neighborhoods and customs is a practical advantage.
  • Working knowledge of word processing and database management in the current Microsoft Office environment.
  • Commitment to health equity and racial/social justice issues.
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn about the role of public health in addressing racism, the social determinants of health, and inequities in health outcomes as well as strategies to advance racial justice and health equity.
